Innovative service project provides Internet for northern Canadian kids

We all know how frustrating it is to when the Internet is down. That’s what makes non-profit One Laptop Per Child Canada such a useful organization. OLPC has already outfitted 4,000 Aboriginal youth with their portable computers and, thanks to the efforts of 80 Year 2 computer science students at UCC, that number has recently increased.

As their year-end project, our students learned to repair and program OLPC laptops, which were then shipped to two primary schools thousands of kilometres away, in Nelson House and Yellowknife,

Watch this two-minute video to see the boys in action. Thanks to their teacher Mark Hoel for producing the video and Kevin Olds whose connections at OLPC and his tireless work made this project happen. Geography teacher Craig Parkinson designed the grading rubric and provided support on character education and service learning.
