Three teams composed of Year 2 students had great results at Ontario Student Debating Union’s junior provincial championships at the White Oaks Secondary School in Oakville, Ont. on Saturday, Feb. 21.
Three students placed in the top five speakers. Matt Wang placed fourth, David Niddam-Dent placed third and Adam Rothman placed first overall out of 68 debaters.
As well, out of the 34 teams in attendance, our teams placed third (Adam Rothman and David Niddam-Dent), sixth (Julian Samek and Matthew Wang) and tenth (Aryan Paliwal and Hilli Goldhar). This was a fantastic result and means UCC will be sending two teams to the nationals in Winnipeg later this spring.
The boys debated four rounds. The first two were the prepared resolution: This house would not develop artificial intelligence. The first impromptu round in the afternoon was: This house would force clinically obese children to attend weight loss and educational summer camps. The last round of the tournament was also impromptu: This house would not allow essential workers the right to strike.
Senior debaters, IB! students Nitish Dhingra and Justin Lu, came out to help judge rounds and give support to our junior teams, which was very much appreciated.
We’re very proud of the boys’ effort on Saturday. Stay tuned for the results of the provincial tournament Saturday, Feb. 28 and Sunday, March 1.
