Upper Canada College’s Senior Jazz Band and Wind Ensemble won gold awards at a major music festival in New York City on the weekend.
Due to both bands’ solid performances, UCC was awarded the “Sweepstakes for Instrumental Program” trophy for receiving the most points for instrumental performances out of any school at the large competition.
The Wind Ensemble is directed by Tony Gomes and the Senior Jazz Band is directed by Peter Smith.
The latter group will have its final performance of the school year on April 24 at 7:30 p.m. in Weston Hall as part of Jazz Night. It will play two sets of classic jazz, swing and blues charts from the likes of Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk and Ella Fitzgerald.
Tickets are $10 and can be bought at the door. The proceeds will go to charity.
