Upper Canada College’s Prep bands have had a very rewarding May.
The jazz band, concert band and wind ensemble — led by teacher Paul McGarr — competed against several senior high schools at the Toronto Festival of Music at York University on May 8 and all came away with gold awards. The jazz band was recognized as the most outstanding in the festival and Richard Kwok was selected as the most outstanding soloist.
There was more success last week, as the jazz band earned gold and Kurt Karul was recognized for his outstanding musicianship at the National Festival at University of Toronto early last week.
The concert band and wind ensemble followed that up on May 15 at the same festival with gold awards of their own. The wind ensemble received an additional gold award for its sight reading test during its clinic time, where it had five minutes to look over a piece of music with McGarr and had one chance to play it all the way through. Leadership and musicianship awards were presented to the concert band’s Oliver Odendaal and the wind ensemble’s Sam Moore.
“The boys dug deep to maintain their focus to perform extremely well, peaking at just the right time of the year,” says McGarr. “It was such a rewarding way to finish the year with our final performances.”
