Varsity volleyball shows great tenacity as UCC co-hosts tournament

UCC co-hosted the SMC Showcase volleyball tournament for the third consecutive year, on Friday, Oct. 16 and Saturday, Oct. 17. As always, it featured some of the top high school boys’ teams in Ontario, many being medal winners at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) championships last fall.

Although our very own varsity Blues were a bit outmatched, the team battled hard and competed well against the behemoths in our sport.

“We were up against some top-tier competition yet showed that we could compete,” says co-captain and IB2 student Jake Bradshaw. “We had some lapses in momentum throughout the day yet played a great final match almost beating the OFSAA silver team.”

Fans were treated to a glimpse of the skill, power, finesse and culture of the sport. The tournament culminated in a sneak peek of the medal matches likely to be played in late November at this year’s OFSAA championships. In the final, Eden High School defeated Oakridge School two sets to one.

Congratulations to all the participating players and coaches and we hope to bring this level of volleyball to UCC again next October.
