Our varsity basketball, volleyball and badminton teams are set to get a boost with the revamp of the Hewitt Athletic Centre’s varsity locker-rooms.
Demolition of the existing spaces — which were out-of-date and required a makeover — started on Monday, Dec. 7. The completed renovation will have a look and feel similar to the William Wilder ’40 Arena & Sports Complex, and will feature new and improved locker-rooms, an upgraded change room for our growing number of female staff and coaches, as well as improved air handling throughout.
This great project was spearheaded by lead donors and grandparents Jerry and Joan Colangelo, and current parents Bryan Colangelo and Barbara Bottini.
Says Bottini, “Bryan and I know how important athletics are to the fabric of the school. We were so pleased to be able to kick-start this renovation, which will see our players and female faculty and coaches enjoying these new spaces.”
The home locker-room will be outfitted with whiteboard and projector technology for game review.
A roomier women’s change room will have bigger coaches’ lockers, additional day lockers, and new shower stalls. “The expansion and renovation of the women’s faculty change room was much-needed,” says Bryan Colangelo. “Improving that space was one of the overall project’s key drivers.”
Contributions from the UCC community helped give all the renovations lift-off. Says donor and parent Liza Murrell, “Supporting this project really appealed to our family because even though our older son is graduating this year, we know that the locker-rooms will benefit many boys in the years to come.”
