Upper Canada College’s varsity football team took the celebratory mood surrounding St. Andrew’s College’s homecoming weekend down a notch on Oct. 1 when the Blues beat the Saints 15-11.
The Blues opened the scoring on a touchdown pass from Jay Williams to Juwan Edghill. A successful convert by placekicker Oscar Para-Lara made the score 7-0. After a stalled offensive drive, SAC conceded a two-point safety to give UCC a 9-0 lead.
The first quarter went back and forth after that, with SAC eventually getting on the scoreboard with a touchdown and convert to make the score 9-7. The home team then added a single point to narrow the margin to 9-8.
UCC regained the momentum on runs by Rasheed Tucker and went ahead 15-9. The convert attempt was blocked and set the stage for a tense game based on field position in the second half.
The Saints were marching down the field in the fourth quarter but the drive was stalled by a UCC interception. The Blues then couldn’t muster much offence and had to concede a safety to reduce its lead to four points. UCC’s defence held in the final two minutes and the team emerged with a 15-11 victory.
