His classmates just voted him head steward for 2009–10. Clearly they recognize leadership qualities when they see them; IB2 student John Park, 18, is one of just 20 Canadians on the Globe and Mail’s “Top 20 Under 20” list, published June 3.
Park is receiving national recognition for having established Environmentally Concerned Students, which is currently focused on urging the Canadian government to halt Arctic oil and gas exploration in the pristine and fragile Beaufort Sea. His group has gathered about 2,000 signatures to date.
“The problem is that there aren’t sufficient oil spill response plans in place,” Park says. “Oil spills in the Arctic mean complete disaster. They are impossible to clean up in the Arctic waters because of factors including low temperatures, rough seas, limited visibility and strong winds.”
