CBC radio broadcast celebrates students’ efforts to send Nunavut grads to prom in style

6/25/2009

When he got the call, he knew he had to help. IB student Angut Pedersen is from Nunavut, and he well knows that high school graduation, in the North, is the exception not the rule.

But thanks to Pederson, and a prom-clothing drive spearheaded by his classmates Ryan Lam and Xavier Alexis-Rivas, 15 grads in Igloolik were sent to graduation in style. The goal of the clothing drive was to celebrate the current graduates and offer inspiration for other students to complete their high school education.

The success of the effort was recently celebrated on a CBC Radio One broadcast of “The World this Week,” June 7. (Click here to listen.)

Pedersen heard about the clothing drive through an e-mail received by a teacher. As UCC’s only native student, and one of only three to date, he had a special interest in delivering the goods.

“As soon as I got the word I responded without hesitation,” says Pedersen. The boys also sent the word to Branksome Hall, the independent girls’ school. Calls for clothing were issued at morning assemblies and on posters throughout the College.

When all was collected, the cache was tremendous — brands like Armani and Prada, 30 pairs of heels and more than 200 dresses and suits.

“The response was overwhelming,” says Pedersen. “But it’s also an inspiration for others to stay in school.”
