UCC students get contract to produce animated ad

10/1/2009

It took two UCC students 300 hours of work to produce two minutes of digital animation. But the results speak for themselves. IB2 students Kevin Ballon and Amal Chandaria produced a professional quality, animated ad that shows alumni the impact of their donations on the quality of their UCC experience.

“We were thrilled to have a professional contract,” says Ballon. The boys worked from an initial idea from Mark Battley, head of digital media. Then, with the help of film teacher Tavo Rooneem, they storyboarded scenes and consulted with Smriti Kapoor, manager of annual giving. She was impressed by an earlier piece of animation the boys had produced, which led her to approach them on this project.

“The key message is that tuition only covers 80 per cent of the cost of a UCC education,” says Kapoor. The innovative piece of digital animation uses charming stick figure characters which is as informative as it is entertaining.

The two students couldn’t be more pleased about the experience: “We learned an enormous amount, not only about animation, but also about dealing with professional clients and seeing a complicated project through to completion,” they say.
