UCC mourns former Board Chairman Gordon Cheesbrough ’71
 6/24/2010
The UCC flag flies low today in memory of Gordon Cheesbrough '71, father of Gordie ’01, former Chairman of the Board of Governors (1997–2002), longtime UCC friend, and supportive volunteer and donor. He passed away June 23, after a very brief illness.
The news comes as a great shock to all who knew him. His involvement with UCC spans decades, and countless committees, boards and task forces, and his loss will be deeply felt.
Cheesbrough was co-founder and managing partner at Toronto-based advisory firm and money manager Blair Franklin Capital Partners. He was president and chief executive officer of Altamira Investment Services Inc. (1998–2002) and served on the board of directors of the Canadian Tire Corporation (1998–2007).
At the time of his passing he was also a director of the Canadian National Stock Exchange and board chairman of the North York General Hospital.
“All those at UCC who worked closely with Gord knew him to be a force of nature: tenacious, passionate and committed,” says Principal Jim Power. “He was a tireless advocate for UCC, believing staunchly that the school should ‘aim high’ in all areas of endeavour, and always challenging us to do and become our best.
“Gord was generous with his time and with his philanthropy to the school; he gave generously in every way an Old Boy could. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife Kim and all Gord’s family at this terrible loss.” |
