Twelve members of Upper Canada College’s debating team ventured to Kingston, Ont. on Jan. 10 to compete against more than 100 teams from across Canada in a competitive tournament hosted by the Queen’s Debating Union.
UCC was represented by five senior teams and one junior team as well as advisers/chaperones Steven Penner and Gregory McDonald.
UCC’s Kimathi Muiruri and Malcolm Risk finished third in the junior division and qualified to represent Canada at the International Competition for Young Debaters in Oxford, England in the spring.
Four UCC senior teams finished in the top 16 and moved into the octo-finals. UCC’s skilled pairing of Elliot Kaufman and John Lutz lost in an upset to Branksome Hall in that round, and the duos of Josh Caminiti and Alnur Lakha and Andrew Irwin and Kinton Cheung were also stopped there. But Logan Ye and Christopher Taylor advanced to the semi-finals, where they went down to a strong mixed team from Bayview Secondary/Richmond Hill High School.
Lutz was ranked fourth, Taylor fifth and Kaufman, Caminiti and Irwin in a tie for 12th individually among senior speakers.
There are several debating tournaments remaining in the season and UCC will no doubt be in the thick of things looking to keep the College’s proud legacy going.
