Upper Canada College’s U12A basketball team’s dominant season continued on Jan. 23 and 24 with a gold medal performance at the Lower Canada College Invitational Basketball Tournament in Montreal.
The Blues won five straight games in the 14-team tournament to claim the title, defeating the host school, Notre Dame, Selwyn House and The Priory School before beating St. Monica Bilingual School 36-29 in the final.
The team has a 15-1 record so far and went 5-0 in its own UCC Invitational U12 Basketball Tournament earlier this month before succumbing in the final to capture second place.
The Blues are ranked first in their age division in the Conference of Independent Schools of Ontario Athletic Association, with their toughest competition coming from Hillfield Strathallan College and Crescent School. The league championship tournament takes place on Feb. 21 at Hillfield Strathallan.
“This year’s U12s are one of the most committed, intelligent and resilient teams I’ve coached while at UCC,” says head coach JP Cavalluzzo. “Our team is characterized by team basketball, as each player contributes greatly to our success on and off the court.
“Many teachers and students have started calling my team the ‘Baby Cavs,’ however their team-first approach more so resembles the San Antonio Spurs.”
