Principal Sam McKinney has announced the appointments of Tanya Sweeney as Head of the Preparatory School and Naheed Bardai as Head of the Upper School. Sweeney and Bardai will assume their roles on July 1 and will be members of the College’s Senior Leadership Team. At that time, these new positions will replace the current divisional structure, with dedicated Heads of the Primary, Middle, Intermediate and Senior Divisions.
As Heads of School, Sweeney and Bardai will be responsible for leading, coaching and developing faculty and staff, and ensuring the delivery of excellence in teaching and learning, resulting in exceptional student experiences in their respective schools.
“I’m incredibly excited to join UCC and to embrace the challenges and joys that will come with leading the Preparatory School,” says Sweeney. “Teaching at and leading schools around the world has instilled in me deep appreciation for the importance of learning in a culture that celebrates differences and gives voice to multiple perspectives. I’m eager to share my experiences, learn from the College’s faculty and staff, and most importantly discover UCC from the boys themselves.”
Sweeney brings to the College significant international leadership experience. She has spent the past six years at the American International School in Hong Kong where she is currently finishing her term as Assistant Head of the School and Elementary School Principal. Tanya also spent six years in Kuwait serving as Elementary School Principal of two schools, Al-Bayan Bilingual School and the American Academy for Girls. Tanya began her educational career in Canada with teaching positions at Somerset Academy in Markham, Ont. and as a Kindergarten and Intermediate arts teacher with the Thames Valley District School Board. She holds degrees from Western University (Bachelor of Music Education), Brock University (Bachelor of Education) and the University of Toronto (Master of Education). In addition, Tanya holds an Ontario Principals’ Certification from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto and is a Past Chair of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges Accreditation Teams.
“I’m delighted to be joining the Upper School as its new Head,” says Bardai. “My teaching and leadership experiences around the world have taught me that successful schools are centres for dialogue, development and innovation. It’s a focus on this vision that will guide my leadership. Working with our faculty, staff and parent community, we’ll continually strive to deliver exceptional learning experiences, enabling our boys to become their best selves and make positive and lasting impacts on their communities.”
Bardai has been Head of the Middle Division for three years and is a member of the College’s Senior Leadership Team. Prior to joining UCC, he spent 10 years with The Aga Khan Academy in Mombasa, Kenya, as the Principal of Senior School and Diploma Program Co-ordinator, along with roles as the Dean of Students and teacher/Head of the Humanities Department. Naheed holds degrees from Western University’s Richard Ivey School of Business (Honours Business Administration), the University of British Columbia (Bachelor of Education), Institute of Education, University of London (Master of Arts in Comparative Education) and Columbia University (Master of Education in Private School Leadership). Naheed is an International Baccalaureate (IB) examiner, site team leader, Diploma consultant and part of the IB’s Theory of Knowledge curriculum development team. In addition, he was a Fellow at the Harvard Graduate School of Education’s Future of Learning Institute.
“I’m confident Tanya and Naheed will make an extraordinary impact on the College,” says Principal Sam McKinney. “They’re taking on new roles at an exciting time of transformation and change both at UCC and in the educational field.”
