Members of the board of governors and the board’s seven committees are widely representative of Old Boys and parents, as well as the College community and the broader Canadian community. The chair of the board of governors is Russell Higgins ’81. Principal Sam McKinney, who is responsible for all aspects of the College’s programs and administrative operations, reports to the board of governors.
Russell Higgins ’81
Russell has served on the UCC Board of Governors since 2010. During his tenure on the Board, he has been chair of the Norval Long Range Planning Committee and chair of the Property Committee. Russell also chaired the Principal Search Committee which selected Sam McKinney as UCC’s 19th Principal. He has been chair of the Board of Governors since January 2016. Prior to his appointment to the Board, Russell was a member of the UCC Association Council and was chair of the Council of 1829.
Russell is a principal of MacPherson Builders Limited, a builder of low and mid-rise subdivisions throughout southern Ontario. He is a graduate of Princeton University. Russell and his wife June have one son, Simon ’16.
Lincoln Caylor ’87
Litigator Lincoln Caylor is a senior partner at Bennett Jones LLP in Toronto and was recently singled out as “…by far one of the most talented and formidable lawyers in the [asset recovery] field” by Who’s Who Legal: Canada. His practice is considered to be at the forefront of the economic crime field for leading international asset tracing investigations and pursuing asset recovery litigation and enforcement actions in prominent, high-value financial frauds.
Recognized as “a strong litigator and strong negotiator with a lot of expertise” by Chambers Canada and selected as a “Most Highly Regarded Individual” in North America and the only one in Toronto by WWL: Canada and Who’s Who Legal: Asset Recovery, he regularly directs internal investigations for clients in a range of industries, from financial services to securities to health care.
Lincoln is the only Toronto member of ICC FraudNet, a worldwide network of selected lawyers specialized in asset tracing and recovery. Regarded as an influencer in the economic crime and asset recovery fields, he appeared on Global News 16×9’s investigative report: The Billionaire and the Bank, explaining a bank’s role in the world’s second-largest Ponzi scheme. He previously addressed the Commons Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights and the Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs by request to give evidence regarding sentencing for fraud under Bill C-21, an Act to Amend the Criminal Code.
He is a governor and vice-chairman of Upper Canada College and chairman of the board of trustees of the Barrow Foundation, which provides scholarships to boys attending Upper Canada College. Prior to being appointed to the board, Lincoln chaired the Joe Cressy Golf Tournament and served on the boarding task force, the governance review committee and the long range planning committee. Lincoln received the Harold Roberts Award in 2012. Recently, appointed to serve on the board of the Canadian Institute’s Corporate Liability/White Collar Crime Journal, he is also on the board of directors of the Macdonald Laurier Institute, a non-partisan think tank based in Ottawa. He served a two-year term, as a member of the Investor Advisory Panel to the Ontario Securities Commission.
In 2012, Lincoln was presented with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his contributions to Canada.
Lincoln and his wife Melissa have two sons, Jack ’14 and Sam ’16, as well as a daughter, Eliza.
KEN TANENBAUM is Chairman of Kilmer Developments, the entity leading the renewal and 50 year concession operations of the 23 ONroute Highway Service Centres, in partnership with HMS Host, as well as the design, finance and construction of the 2015 Pan Am Games Athletes’ Village project in partnership with Dream; he is the Founder and Chairman of the Kilmer Brownfield Equity Fund, which is committed to creating value by remediating and repositioning contaminated land; and, he also serves as Vice Chairman of Kilmer Van Nostrand (KVN), a family holding company with interests in sports & media, private equity and infrastructure. He is a graduate of the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. Ken has a long history of volunteer leadership with many organizations, including UJA Federation, Mount Sinai Hospital, MADD Canada, Evergreen, and University of Toronto. Ken is passionate about the promise of Canada and is committed to aligning his business and volunteer interests with building healthy cities and vibrant communities. He lives in Toronto with his wife, Jennifer, and their four children, three of whom are UCC students.
Nina Abdelmessih is Chief of Operations and External Relations for the Canadian practice of The Boston Consulting Group, a global management consulting firm. She has more than 20 years of experience at BCG, with a unique career path that spans both client service and leadership of global and national practices. Nina holds a Bachelor of Commerce from McGill University and an MBA from Ivey Business School.
Nina has two sons, Jackson ’18 and Troy ’20.
Sue is a past chair of the Prep Parents’ Organization at the Prep School and past president of the Parents’ Organization at the Upper School. She’s been a member of the Association Council and has served as a vice-president. She’s a board member at The Massey Centre for Women. Her volunteer work also includes the Art Gallery of Ontario, Human Rights Watch, the Childrens’ Book Bank and Mooredale House. Sue and her husband Greg have three sons, Michael ’03, Ryan ’06 and David ’12, and a daughter, Rachael.
Todd Hargarten is Executive Managing Director and Head of the Securities Finance & Funding group at TD Securities. He is a Chartered Professional Accountants and a Chartered Financial Analyst and holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Saskatchewan as well as a Master’s of Business Administration degree from the University of Western Ontario. Among Todd’s involvements at UCC, he serves as Chair of the Human Resource Committee and as a member of the Finance and Audit Committee. Previous involvement includes serving as Chair of the Parents Annual Giving Committee for the UCC Fund and as a member of the Advancement Committee. Todd and his wife Sarah have one son, Adam ’20, as well as two daughters, Tess and Laine.
Blake Hutcheson ’80
Blake Hutcheson is the President and CEO of Oxford Properties Group. He is responsible for Oxford’s overall business including its long-term strategy and objectives, and leading the executive management team in the execution of the $45 billion global business plan. He is also the Chief Investment Officer of Real Estate and Platform Investments for OMERS and a member of the Executive Management Committee of OMERS.
Blake holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Western Ontario, a Graduate Diploma in International Relations and Comparative Politics from the London School of Economics and a Master’s in Real Estate Development from Columbia University.
Among his many volunteer roles at UCC, he has served as a Trustee on the Foundation Board, was co-chair of the Boarding Campaign, has served on the Campaign Cabinet and as a member of the Board’s advancement sub-committee.
Blake and his wife Susan’s son, Trevor, graduates in 2017.
Karen Hacker’s legal and executive career spans more than 30 years. After ten years practicing law at Goodman and Carr in Toronto, she held senior roles at some of Canada’s most well-known companies including Cineplex Odeon Corporation, Irwin Toy, Spin Master Ltd., and St. Joseph Communications.
In November 2010, Karen took on the role of General Counsel and Corporate Secretary for the Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games Organizing Committee. In March 2014, she added responsibility for human resources, volunteer recruitment and workforce planning to her portfolio. The Games were wildly successful, leaving social, economic and sport legacies to Toronto that will last for decades.
After an interim role in 2016 as Chief Operating Officer at U Sport (formerly Canadian Interuniversity Sport), Karen now applies her expertise in the areas of law, governance and sport to a number of not-for-profit boards.
Karen lives in Toronto. She and her husband, Irv, have a daughter, Robin, and two sons, Sean (’11) and Mattie (’13).
Loewe Lee ‘99
Loewe is managing director of National Electronics Holdings Limited and its various subsidiaries, including National Properties Holdings Limited. National Properties is one of the leading luxury developers in Hong Kong and has also been active in Toronto for over 20 years. Loewe previously worked in investment banking at JPMorgan in New York. The Harvard University economics graduate sits on UCC’s Asia advisory council as well as the boards of various trade and non-profit organizations in Hong Kong. Loewe and his wife Emily have three children, Emma, Oscar and Willow.
Charlie Sims ’80
Charlie Sims, FCPA, FCA, is President & CEO of Cumberland Partners Limited and Cumberland Private Wealth Management Inc. Prior to this, Charlie most recently served as Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Mackenzie Financial Corporation, and Co-President and Chief Executive Officer of IGM Financial, Inc.
He has been a director of various private companies since 1992 and served on the Board of IGM Financial, Inc. from 2005 until 2013. In 2009, Mr. Sims joined the Board of Directors of Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation, where he is currently Chair of their investment Committee. He is also Chairman of the V-42 Foundation.
Charlie is currently a member of the Finance and Audit Committee of the Board. He served as a Trustee on the UCC Foundation Board from 2005-2014. He was also a member of the Foundation’s Audit and Finance Committee from 2006-2014, serving as chair from 2010-2014.
Dr. Catherine Zahn
Dr. Catherine Zahn is President and CEO of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) and Professor in the U of T Faculty of Medicine. She and her husband Jeffrey have two sons, Michael ’01 and William ’09.
Matt Johnson ’95
Matt is a Vice President at Colliers International, a leading full service commercial real estate firm, and co-chair of Colliers Not for Profit Advisory Group. In addition to his work with for profit entities, Matt’s team advises many prominent nonprofit and charitable organizations including Ronald McDonald House, Plan Canada, Canadian Payroll Association, and various school boards and religious organizations. Matt is a frequent speaker at industry events and is a faculty member within Colliers’ training program, Colliers University.
Matt is currently the president of the Association Council at UCC and has served as a member since 2010. He was also a founder of the Young Alumni Network and served as its chair from 2007-2009.
Other ex-officio members include the Chief Justice of Ontario, the Treasurer of the Law Society of Upper Canada and the Chancellor of the University of Toronto.
