CLP: 2020

Our 2020-21 Academic Year

UCC is looking forward to welcoming students back to campus for the 2020-21 academic year. With the health and safety of our community as our top priority, our preparations are aligned with public health guidelines and the Ministry of Education’s Approach to Reopening Schools. This year may look different, but our commitment to the College’s values remains steadfast. We will continue to provide transformational learning experiences that fulfill our vision and mission to foster the development of head, heart and humanity and inspire boys to be their best selves.
UCC’s Continuous Learning Plan (CLP) will guide our delivery of learning this year. The CLP originated in March 2020 with our COVID-19 campus closure and effectively supported remote learning and student life. It has been updated to reflect and respond to evolving circumstances and is grounded in promoting health and safety, advancing academic excellence, and supporting the wellbeing of our community.

Continuous Learning Plan highlights

The CLP includes learning models that support a safe return to face-to-face learning on campus; the flexibility to shift the delivery of our program between normal, hybrid and remote forms as needed; and technology platforms to support student learning.

Supporting student learning
Teachers, advisers and the Wernham West Centre for Learning (WWCfL) will ensure a smooth transition back to campus with the following support:
  • Content review integrated throughout the year to reinforce fundamental building blocks.
  • Student wellbeing curriculum delivered through advising programs.
  • Instruction geared towards developing agency and independence in learning, including the skills required to learn remotely.

Technology support
The following technology support is in place:
  • Students will have a working device to support at-home learning.
  • New and existing learning management systems, Google Suite products, and parent and student portals available 24/7.
  • Classrooms are outfitted with streaming cameras and multi-directional microphones to ensure remote students are connected to the classroom.
  • Help Desk available Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and reachable at HelpDesk@ucc.on.ca.

Looking ahead: The 2020-21 academic year at UCC

We are planning with much enthusiasm — and appropriate caution — for our return to campus. This includes welcoming all students including our boarders at the earliest and safest possible opportunity. We believe having students engaged in on-campus learning is the best way to deliver transformational experiences that will inspire them to pursue their best selves in all that they do.

Campus health and safety

Limiting density on campus is a critical component of our plan, including requiring physical distancing, limiting class sizes to 15 students, and ensuring boarding students have single-room accommodations. In addition, we've developed the flexibility to implement a modified schedule and remote learning to ensure continuity of learning as required.

Keeping our community safe:
  • Strict policies are in place for symptomatic students and employees.
  • Student screening: Families must use the daily screening tool before students arrive at school.
  • Signs are posted at entrances to the school to remind students, employees and essential visitors of protocols.
  • Daily records of people entering the school will be maintained to support contact tracing if necessary.
