Helping Hands ends the year on a high note with two standout acts of service

In a food drive led by Year 9 student Apostolos Zezos, Helping Hands collected an impressive 800 pounds of goods — the equivalent of about one pound per UCC student — for the Churches on-the-Hill food bank, a member agency of the Daily Bread Food Bank.

“I was really proud that we were ultimately able to reach our goal,” says Michael Young, a Year 11 student and founder of Helping Hands. “It demonstrated that overall as a school, we care about our community and especially the less fortunate.”

As a community supporter of the agency, Helping Hands organizes weekend volunteer trips to the Daily Bread Food Bank, as well as ongoing service opportunities. A group of 31 Upper School students visited the food bank in April, where they sorted and processed thousands of pounds of produce.

In addition to serving those in need, Helping Hands found time last month to bring the school together for some live entertainment. On May 31, the club hosted the finals of the second annual talent show during an Upper School assembly.

While each performance garnered a standing ovation, Prasetya ultimately took home top honours.

“It's definitely become a tradition at our school where students get to show off in front of their peers for bragging rights and a prize,” Young says. “Above all, it's also a fun assembly that students look forward to.”
