Sports successes make fall season shine
Championship honours have gone to four Upper Canada College teams.
The varsity volleyball team was undefeated in league play, claiming Canadian Independent Schools Athletic Association (CISAA) honours and winning against St. Andrew’s 3-1 in the final. The team now heads to the Ontario Federation of Secondary School Athletics (OFSAA) provincial
championships, coming up later in November.

Their U14 (Year 8) volleyball counterparts were also undefeated, winning the CISAA Division 1 final 3-1 over St. Michael’s College School.
In cross-country, the U14 team was the U14 CISAA champion, while the varsity team earned second place honours at the league championships.
UCC’s varsity soccer team repeated as league champions. They were second in the league during the season, but blanked Crescent, the first-place team, 4-0, in the championship game.
“The team had a coaching changeover this year, so it’s a testament to both the boys and the coaches,” says Brent MacKay, athletic director for the Upper School. The soccer team has been near or at the top of the league standings for the past 20 years.
Three of the four other Upper School soccer teams – U14, U16A and junior varsity – lost in the championship semi-final.
“Both the soccer and volleyball programs carry over from the Prep School,” MacKay says. “They’re competitive there and remain competitive here.”
In addition, the varsity football team lost in the championship semi-final; the junior varsity team also lost its semi-final, by only two points.
The Prep School added to UCC’s record of fall sports success. The U12A soccer team, the U14 (Year 7) Division 2 volleyball team and the U12 volleyball team were CISAA champions, and both the U10 cross-country team and the overall boys’ team were first at the CISAA championships. The field hockey team finished its season undefeated.
Adding some extra shine to the Prep’s accomplishments, the U13A soccer team was the CISAA Division 1 champion and earned a silver medal at the CAIS (Canadian Accredited Independent Schools) National Tournament in Ottawa.
