UCC hosts Future Prize 2020 Challenge

On January 30, 27 CIS Ontario schools came to campus for the Future Design School’s 2020 design challenge.
Teams were tasked with creating a solution to a current climate change-related issue in their communities. Design thinking is a crucial part of UCC’s International Baccalaureate programming, and our students were able to exercise their design muscles, devising innovations to combat a real-world problem.

Working in Weston Hall at the Prep School, UCC had three teams entered in the challenge. The Year 7 team investigated how we might reduce the food and energy waste connected to daily food service delivery to the College, while the two Year 8 teams focused on flooding as a source of environmental distress. One Year 8 team looked at how to mitigate water damage as a result of flooding, while the other team focused on an application for a green roof network in Toronto that collected important data such as temperature, amount of precipitation and energy saved.

Two UCC teams received the People’s Choice Award for best pitch. Branksome Hall (with an assist from alternate UCC team member Omid Aliahmadi) took home the Future Prize 2020 with their concept of a solution to low-waste diversion in highrise buildings.
