UCC wins Panda Cup Chinese Speech Contest

Five Upper Canada College students performed very well at the Panda Cup Chinese Speech Contest held by the Toronto Chinese Consulate-General and the Chinese Culture and Education Society of Canada on Aug. 25.

This year’s theme was “The Year of Tourism between China and Canada.” More than 80 elementary and high school students from Toronto, York Region, Windsor, Guelph, Waterloo, Winnipeg and Halifax participated in the contest.
The high school students were divided into two groups: one for students who’ve lived in Canada since they were young; and another for those who moved to Canada less than five years ago.

UCC teams finished first in both divisions, while also earning a second- and two third-place finishes. UCC was also named the best school.

Year 11 student James Liao finished first in group one with an amazing speech about the different food habits in Canada and China.

Group two winner, Year 10 student Jack Gao, spoke about his conflicting identity as a Chinese Canadian.

Year 9 student Tiger Xie finished second, while Year 9 student Jack Zhu and Year 12 student George Chen both came in third.

The Panda Cup contest has been held by the Chinese Consulate-General in Toronto for seven consecutive years. Past competitions involved essay writing, a talent show, calligraphy and painting, a short video, speeches and more. UCC students have had outstanding performances every year.
