Much to cheer about on UCC's 39th Association Day

It made sense that on an Upper Canada College Association Day that had a “Makers and Innovators” theme, its sports teams came up with strategies that made most of them winners. The school’s youngest students helped kick off the 39th annual A-Day with the Prep Soccerfest filling all of the Prep fields except for Commons, where UCC’s U14 soccer team was beating Royal St. George’s College 7-0.

Inside, at the Hewitt Athletic Centre, the U14 volleyball team outlasted Crescent School three games to two in an exhibition match. The U16 players followed their younger counterparts on to the court and also took a five-game match against Crescent. The U14 Year 7 volleyball team later beat Sterling Hall School three games to one.

The action moved on to the oval field, where UCC’s junior varsity football team defeated Huron Heights Secondary School 23-15. The junior varsity soccer team also came out on top with a 4-1 win over Crescent.

Two of UCC’s other younger soccer teams were also victorious, with U11A beating Crescent 3-0 and U13B defeating Sterling Hall 2-0. The U12A soccer team tied Crescent 1-1.

The U16A soccer team beat De La Salle College 4-1 while the U16B team played an exhibition game against St. Andrew’s College.

The varsity teams, featuring the oldest and best players, were also in action and drew some of the biggest crowds.

The varsity volleyball team was unblemished in sweeping Crescent in three games. Similarly, the varsity soccer team came out on top in a 3-0 decision over Trinity College School. Things culminated on the oval with the varsity football team taking it to TCS by a score of 32-14 after some members of the class of ’68 visited them in the dressing room before the game to offer inspiration.

UCC suffered just two losses on A-Day, with the U12 volleyball team dropping a match to Crescent and the U13A soccer team going down to the same school by a 3-2 score.

It wasn’t just student athletes who were in action on A-Day, however. Old Boys and other community members took part in four events.

The Michael Evan Jurist '03 Memorial Tennis Tournament always draws an eclectic group of players, and this year was no exception, as the courts were filled and the energy and competition level were high.

Old Boys played hard for bragging rights and an annual cup at the Allan Harris Old Boys Soccer Tournament. Members of the class of ’78 took over the sports court for a road hockey game. A new element was also introduced to A-Day this year: the young alumni softball game.

Meanwhile, some of the youngest A-Day attendees got their exercise by bouncing around the sports-related and themed inflatable attractions in the Kid Zone. And the LEGO tent was a big draw, where Fred Eaton '82 and Christina Eaton sponsored a very creative take-home clock tower project for participants. And our sponsored Syrian family, the Farastakis, came out to enjoy the great day.

And last but not least, the baseball pitchers of tomorrow showed off their fastballs while trying to soak some of their favourite teachers in the perennially popular dunk tank.
