Varsity soccer and football teams win championships

UCC hosted Appleby College at 10:45 a.m. in the soccer final and St. Andrew’s College (SAC) at 1:30 p.m. in the football final. Both left the oval with shutout victories when the final whistles had blown.

 

The Blues soccer team racked up seven wins and one loss in the regular season and defeated SAC 4-3 in a semi-final match. That led to the final against a determined Appleby team, which the Blues had defeated 6-2 to open the season.

 

Luka Chu scored for the Blues in the 63rd minute and goalkeeper Jeremy Zhang made several key saves as the Blues became CISAA champs with a 1-0 victory.

 

The Blues had an overall 12-win and two-loss record for their season, which included five wins before a 1-0 loss to Vancouver’s St. George’s School in the final of the Canadian Accredited Independent Schools Senior Boys Soccer Tournament hosted by Rothesay Netherwood School in Rothesay, N.B.

 

UCC’s varsity football team went undefeated, with four straight wins, during its regular season. That included a 32-14 home win over Trinity College School (TCS) on Association Day and a 31-17 vanquishing of St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) at University of Toronto’s Varsity Stadium in the annual “Battle of the Blues.”

 

UCC used a solid run game and a relentless defence to roll over TCS 32-8 in a semi-final home game. That set up the final against SAC, which upset SMCS in their semi-final face-off.
