Blues win Barrow Varsity Hockey Tournament

The Blues hosted the 15th annual Barrow Varsity Hockey Tournament this past weekend and used its talent and home ice advantage to claim the title.

The Blues started the tournament against Le Sommet and had what coach Carl Beaudoin and many of the spectators would have described as their best start, and ultimately best game, to date. They got up early and never looked back, burying Le Sommet 6-0.
The Blues’ next game pitted them against Collège de Lévis. It proved to be far more of a challenge, as the Blues scored early but then gave up two goals to fall behind for the first time in the tournament. The Blues challenged but were unable to tie it and, with less than a minute left, Lévis sealed the deal with an empty net goal to take the game 3-1.

Now in a do or die game at 5:30 p.m., the Blues faced Cleveland High School and once again didn’t come out with its “A” game. The team fell behind 3-0 and all looked lost, as the Blues looked to be heading to a friendly competition on Sunday. However, the team fought hard to get back in the game, with goals by Marc- Antoine Goulet and captain PJ Bujouves. With seven minutes left in the third period, the Blues tied it up on a goal by Artem Meshcherin. Regulation timed ended that way and, after overtime solved nothing, the teams went into a shootout. Blues goalie Joe Howe shut the door on the opposing shooters, giving the Blues the win.

This left the Blues in second place in their division and pitted them against an undefeated Ulysse, a familiar opponent that they had both beaten and been beaten by earlier in the season. The semi-final didn’t disappoint, with the Blues taking a 2-0 lead before the team from Montreal surged back to tie it up with just eight seconds left in the second period. The third started with all of the momentum going against the Blues, but, in true Upper Canada College fashion, the team responded with a blast from the point by Tucker MacIntosh to take a 3-2 lead. With two minutes left, Ulysse pulled the goalie for the extra attacker. Twenty seconds later, forward William Monzione fired a puck from the UCC end and found the back of the net to seal the game for UCC and complete his outstanding performance with a hat trick.
Academy A21 somehow managed to knock out Collège de Lévis in their semi-final game on the other side of the draw. That set up a final that turned out to be anti-climactic, as the Blues completely outmatched A21 and captured the tournament title with a 7-1 victory.
