UCC hockey, basketball and squash teams win championships

Upper Canada College’s hockey, basketball and squash teams claimed seven Conference of Independent Schools of Ontario Athletic Association (CISAA) championships in the recently completed winter season.

UCC’s junior varsity hockey team won the CISAA Tier 1B championship with a 2-0 win over Crescent School in the final.

“A terrific group of young men,” coach Brent MacKay says of the team.

“What made it even better for me was coaching with two of my former students, Craig Parkinson and one of my former varsity players, Jeff Hill. Very proud of this group.”

UCC’s U14 hockey team won its CISAA championship with a 4-1 victory over St. Michael’s College School in the final.

Both of UCC’s U12 basketball teams won their respective CISAA championship tournaments. The U12A team ran the table over their opponents while the U12B squad earned their title by defeating Crescent School 20-12, Country Day School 19-17 and Pickering College 27-9.

Two of UCC’s three U10 basketball teams also won their CISAA season-ending tournaments. The U10A team opened their tourney with wins of 31-22 and 30-27 before beating Crescent School 38-30 in the final. The U10 Blue team won its tournament by defeating Country Day School 32-24, Crescent School 38-32 and Sterling Hall School 46-24.

“The boys showed great teamwork throughout the entire tournament and demonstrated their improvement,” says U10 Blue coach Sophie Lurz.

UCC’s U16 squash team travelled to St. Andrew’s College for the CISAA final on March 2.

“The top seven seeds competed and, for the second year in a row, we won the CISAA championship by decidedly earning more points than second-place SAC,” says coach Terry Denstedt.

UCC’s junior and senior swim teams also had winning seasons, capturing CISAA and Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations championships. You can read more about those here
