Chinese Lunar New Year celebrates culture and pluralism

All agreed the crispy chicken was a definite highlight of the multi-course banquet enjoyed by more than 150 students for the annual Lunar New Year field trip Feb. 7.
The first stop was a feast, along with student-produced entertainment — featuring songs and skits — at the Shangri-La Banquet Hall and Convention Centre in Markham. UCC’s Mandarin Club, along with Mandarin course students, joined students from Crescent School, Havergal College, Branksome Hall and Toronto French School for the trip with its biggest turnout yet.

“Celebrating the Lunar New Year is celebrating the culture and celebrating the pluralism we embrace,” says Mandarin Club Heads Billy Shi. “I was very excited to see boys joined us simply because they’re interested in learning more about the culture. The music, the food and the clothes are some of the first but iconic steps we took to introduce this unique culture to more people.”

The boys made a stop at Pacific Mall for some shopping before returning to the College.
