Recent facilities investments inspire learning

Boy are set to enjoy enhanced learning environments, with a fresh new Oval turf and new plans for both the Parkin Wing, a new Prep design lab and the Lecture Theatre at the Upper School.
“Aligned closely with our Strategic Directions, these projects represent an investment of more than $4 million in Upper Canada College’s bold future, and are advancing our mission to provide your sons with transformational learning experiences, both inside and outside the classroom,” says Principal Sam McKinney. “We’re tremendously grateful to the donors in our community whose leadership gifts have enabled the following initiatives.”

Work on the Oval’s artificial turf was completed in April, thanks to a generous donation of $1 million from the Lang Scholar Fund. With input from the student varsity sports captains, a “Never Walk Alone” graphic was designed for the end zones. The Lang Scholar Fund’s “running athlete” logo was also been integrated to represent UCC’s commitment to developing student-athletes of character.

As well, this summer, construction will begin on a purpose-built Prep design lab with completion set for September. It was developed in consultation with faculty from the Prep design program and will be on the Prep’s lower level. It will employ the latest technology and tools; ventilation, soundproofing and storage will be improved.

One of the most historic places on campus, the Parkin Wing, will also undergo a modernization, with four new state of the art, adaptable classrooms, teacher collaboration space and a redesigned hallway, set for next academic year.

“This renovation will create dynamic and versatile settings where Prep students and faculty alike can connect, collaborate and innovate,” says McKinney.

Finally, curricular and co-curricular arts programming will receive a boost this summer with improvements to the studio theatre at the Upper School. Key features of the renovation will include all new electrical and lighting, wall panelling to accommodate optimal acoustics and surround sound, a new projector and screen to premiere student film work, and more seating.

“All of these projects would not be possible without the strong and enduring culture of philanthropy that makes UCC so special,” says McKinney. “In addition to acknowledging the extremely generous leadership gifts that have already been made, I’d like to invite the community to lend your support to these great initiatives as we continue to build learning environments where boys are inspired to be their best selves.”
