Celebrating Our Sporting Alumni

Sport: Track, sprinter (400 metres)

A multisport athlete, chosen UCC’s athlete of the year at the junior and senior levels; played football at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, at quarterback as a freshman before a shoulder injury forced a move to wide receiver; invited to participate in the 2016 Canadian Football League combine; pursuing a graduate degree at the University of Notre Dame, in South Bend, Indiana.

Sport: Football, lineman

A multi-sport athlete at UCC; recipient of the prestigious Morehead-Cain Scholarship at the University of North Carolina; walk-on player for the UNC Tar Heels in the National Collegiate Athletic Association, eventually gaining national attention; has been invited to a Canadian Football League combine; currently pursuing a career in medicine, completing his Master’s degree in neurosciences at Queen’s University.

Sport: Hockey, centre

A professional hockey player, coach, executive and broadcaster; an Olympic athlete, playing on the Canadian men’s hockey team at the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria; a member of the Stanley Cup-winning 1967 Toronto Maple Leafs; broadcasted the 1972 Summit Series alongside fellow UCC alum Foster Hewitt; held various coaching positions, including a part-time post at UCC.

Sport: Hockey, left wing

Played on the 1992 Ontario championship-winning team for UCC; played four seasons of hockey with the Yale University Bulldogs, a Division One team in the Eastern College Athletic Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association; also suited up for the St. Michael’s Buzzers in the Metro Junior A Hockey League and Weiden EV, a Division One team in Germany; studied law at Yale, the University of Toronto and the University of Cambridge; clerked at the Supreme Court of Canada; now a lawyer specializing in corporate and securities, with expertise in real estate, mergers and capital markets.

Sport: Golf

Longstanding member of the UCC golf team; recipient of an athletic scholarship to Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, in 2011; member of the Duke men’s golf team that won the Atlantic Coast Conference championship in 2013; captained the Duke team that made it to the National Collegiate Athletic Association championship in 2015; twice named an All-American and graduated on the dean’s list; currently pursuing a career as a professional golfer.

Sport: Hockey, forward

A top scorer for UCC’s hockey team, who was chosen to the Toronto Star all-star team; suited up for Nanaimo in the British Columbia Hockey League, as well as for Binghamton in the American Hockey League; chosen in the 7^th round of the National Hockey League draft in 2005, 204^th overall, by the Ottawa Senators; traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2016, after playing six seasons for the Ottawa organization. 

Sport: Football, running back

A multi-sport athlete at UCC, focused on football during his post-secondary years at Queen’s University in Kingston; led the league in rushing while averaging almost 20 yards a carry; was named team MVP in 1973 and was later inducted into the Queen’s Hall of Fame; drafted first overall in 1974 by Ottawa in the Canadian Football League and played four professional seasons, for Toronto, Saskatchewan and Hamilton; held the position of Head of School for Lakefield College School, in Lakefield, Ontario, for 23 years before retiring in 2007.

Sport: Basketball, point guard

Recipient of UCC MVP awards in both basketball and volleyball; member of the 2014-15 York University men’s basketball team.

Sport: Rugby

A multi-sport athlete at UCC, and the recipient of several Ontario championships and most valuable player awards; played for Canada’s rugby team at two World Cups; selected Ontario University Athletics rookie of the year and MVP when playing for the University of Western Ontario; a member of teams that took home two provincial rugby gold medals; sidelined by a neck injury while playing for Canada, as well as by a genetic condition that prevented him from continuing his rugby career, he hung up his cleats in 2006.

Sport: Golf

A multisport athlete at UCC who was an Ontario high school golf champion in 2009 and 2010; won the Canadian and Ontario Juvenile titles in 2009; in grades 11 and 12, was selected to Canada’s Junior Development team, and was also a member of the Golf Association of Ontario’s provincial squad; finished seventh at the 2010 World Junior Championship, and qualified as both a U.S. Junior Amateur and a U.S. Amateur; graduated from UCC with many options for athletic scholarships, but ultimately decided on Wake Forest University, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina; currently enjoying a career as an established and celebrated golf pro.

Sport: Baseball, pitcher

Named team MVP as a member of the Blues baseball team; selected a high school all-star by the Toronto Star; prospect pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies; made his National Collegiate Athletic Association baseball start at Georgia Tech; transferred to the University of Michigan, where he was named most valuable pitcher in his first season; filmmaker; currently pursuing a career in the medical field.

Sport: Badminton

Won a pair of medals at the Pan Am Junior Games in 2009 and 2010 while a student at UCC; won a gold medal in the mixed doubles at the Ontario high school provincial playoffs; claimed four men’s singles titles for UCC at the Conference of Independent Schools Athletic Association finals; played four seasons at the University of Western Ontario, before taking on the position of the team’s head coach; pursuing a career as an actuarial associate. 

Sport: Football, quarterback/wide receiver

A multisport athlete, chosen UCC’s athlete of the year at the junior and senior levels; played football at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, at quarterback as a freshman before a shoulder injury forced a move to wide receiver; invited to participate in the 2016 Canadian Football League combine; pursuing a graduate degree at the University of Notre Dame, in South Bend, Indiana.

Sport: Soccer, striker

A top league scorer as a member of the Blues soccer team, in both his junior and senior years, with 90 goals over four seasons; recipient of UCC’s most valuable soccer player; member of three championship teams in the Conference of Independent Schools Athletic Association; named MVP at the 2006 Canadian Accredited Independent Schools soccer playoffs; played four seasons as a Yale University Bulldog, where he was a top scorer and league all-star; played at the professional level with the Colorado Rapids, before returning to Canada to pursue a career as a corporate strategy manager.

Sport: Volleyball, hitter

Team MVP at UCC; was on three Conference of Independent Schools Athletic Association league championship teams, and won a provincial gold medal for the Blues; at Queen’s University, was chosen for the Ontario University Athletics rookie all-star volleyball team; won two league gold meals.

Sport: Tennis

Learning tennis from a young age, was on several Conference of Independent Schools Athletic Association championship teams at UCC; attended Middlebury College, in Vermont, and was on the team that won the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III championship title; placed in Canada’s top 20 in 2013, as well as achieving a ranking on the ATP World Tour; played in the Rogers Cup in 2014.

Sport: Rowing

A world champion rower; gold medalist at the 2003 World Championship in Italy; Olympic silver medalist in the Men’s Coxless Four category in Greece, in 2004; a pair of wins from Rowing World Cup events; currently the Talent Identification and Development Coach for the Canadian Sport Institute on Vancouver Island.

Sport: Tennis

A member of the Blues tennis squad that won a Conference of Independent Schools Athletic Association tennis team championship; recipient of an athletic scholarship to the University of New Mexico’s flagship research institution in Albuquerque; achieved All-American status at the National Collegiate Athletic Association level, playing men’s doubles, and was a member of teams that went on to win consecutive Western Athletic Conference titles; stands fourth in career doubles at UNM; recipient of the Tennis Canada Distinguished Service Award, for making a positive impact on the game; supports the Doug Philpott Inner City Children’s Tennis Fund.
