Inspiring theatre arts

Fostering essential life skills beyond performance

Upper Canada College offers a professional-calibre drama program within the IB Continuum, designed to develop talent, character and a sense of belonging. From classical theatre to large-scale musicals, our students explore dramatic expression from their earliest years to understand themselves and the world, building communication skills, confidence and empathy.

Our program features exceptional facilities, including the David Chu Theatre and the Manucha & Bellamy Studio Theatre. Students benefit from expert faculty mentorship and co-ed performance opportunities through our long-standing partnership with The Bishop Strachan School.

Drama at the Prep School

Building confidence for young learners

Dramatic arts serve as a vital catalyst for self-discovery and creative expression within the IB Primary and Middle Years Programmes. Students immerse themselves in our high-energy fall plays and celebrated winter musicals, while others find their voice in smaller, character-driven productions that remain a highlight of the school year.

Drama at the Upper School

Professional-calibre performance and artistry

Curricular theatre beings at the Upper School in Year 9, providing a fundamental spark for students to explore diverse dramatic forms and sources from various cultures. This journey evolves in Year 10, where the focus shifts to the technical art of theatre; students analyze masterworks by Shakespeare, Chekhov and Canadian playwrights to devise original productions. By integrating stage combat and advanced staging considerations, students refine their creative work through the lens of renowned theatre practitioners, ensuring a rigorous academic foundation for their artistic expression.

As students progress into the IB Diploma Programme in Years 11 and 12, the curriculum emphasizes international-mindedness and the sophisticated role of the dramaturge. Students take full command of the creative process — devising, directing and designing lighting and sets for original presentations. Outside the classroom, the program’s reputation for excellence is cemented by major productions in the David Chu Theatre. These professional-calibre shows, ranging from classical dramas to contemporary musicals, feature collaborative casting with The Bishop Strachan School, providing a realistic and inclusive environment for young artists to excel.
