 Inspiring Leaders

UCC is redefining youth leadership development in Canada

We’re expanding on nearly two centuries of leadership-building through an incredible gift from philanthropists Stu ’70 and Kim Lang. The Lang Leadership Lab’s many dimensions include a full-fledged program for UCC students at every age and stage, a Summer Institute for youth from across Canada, and a future state-of-the-art physical hub to help power program delivery and research.

Vision

To be Canada's centre of youth leadership excellence, developing the Head, Heart and Humanity in the next generation of Canadian leaders.

Focus Areas
  • Research: To be Canada’s primary engine for youth leadership development research and evidence-based practice.
  • UCC Experience: To embed leadership into the UCC journey, ensuring every student graduates with the attributes and skills to lead with head, heart and humanity.
  • National Programming: To build a diverse, national network of youth who lead with head, heart and humanity for the global good.

Enabled By

Strategic partnerships, world-class facilities, translational research and pedagogical integration.

Leadership Attributes

Every student will strive to lead with and through:

Self-Awareness Integrity Courage Empathy Curiosity

It’s not necessarily about being front and centre and holding the title, it’s about embracing empathy and humility, about leading from a place of principle. And it’s about developing those characteristics and skills that help you elevate others.

Stu Lang ’70

The Lang Leadership Lab is made possible through the vision and generosity of Stu Lang ’70 and his wife, Kim Lang. A former CFL star and an esteemed coach, Lang has long believed that leadership is learned through experience, challenge and service.

His support reflects a heartfelt conviction that investing in young people — and giving them the tools to lead with purpose — has the power to create lasting and positive impact. "I'd like UCC to be known as the centre of excellence for leadership training at the youth level," he says.

Fiona Marshall

Fiona Marshall, inaugural director of the Lang Leadership Lab, has extensive experience in student leadership development and a deep understanding of values-driven education. She brings both strategic vision and a strong belief in young people’s capacity to lead.

Her work emphasizes helping students develop the mindsets and skills needed to lead authentically. "It's crucial to understand how students come to their own understanding of their purpose as leaders," she says.
