A generous donation by the Class of 1970 is giving graduating students a unique way to celebrate their postsecondary acceptances.
UCC’s Upper School Student Centre is a vibrant place filled with connection and camaraderie. And during the early months of the calendar year, the resonant toll of a bell can often be heard. It’s almost always followed by an immediate roar of cheers and applause.
The bell is being rung by a proud member of UCC’s leaving class, who has just shared the news of a university acceptance with their University Counselling adviser.
Says University Counselling Director David Hanna, “It’s more than just a sound; it’s a moment of collective pride for our most senior students as they prepare for their next chapter.”
This stirring new tradition was made possible by members of the Class of 1970, who donated the bell to honour their milestone 50-year reunion in 2020. It was cast in the U.K. by Taylor Bells, whose creations include the “Great Paul” bell at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London and the custom-made bell that can be heard at the start of the famous AC/DC song "Hells Bells."
Situated fittingly outside the University Counselling offices adjacent to the Student Centre, it has quickly become a meaningful symbol of shared achievement and community at the College since its instalment last year.
“Members of the Class of 1970 have a special bond as a group, two stellar class presidents and a strong connection to the school,” says Samantha Kerbel, associate director of alumni relations. “As a class, their support for the College is everlasting. I hope the ringing of the bell will continue on as one of the College’s many enduring traditions.”
