Horizons Program at UCC | Empowering Boys

A Rewarding Partnership

Horizons is a tutoring, mentoring and co-learning program between UCC students in Years 8 to 12 and Toronto elementary schools

The program began in 1999 and was created as a partnership between UCC and the TDSB to provide mutually beneficial learning opportunities and experiences for all students involved. Tutoring, mentoring and learning through play happens in a variety of eight-week programs throughout the school year, including in math, learn-to-skate, coding, art and lacrosse.

There’s a strong emphasis on community engagement, with TDSB participants taking part in the College’s World Affairs Conference, Association Day, and activities at our Norval Outdoor School. The UCC intermediate jazz band visits partner schools to put on an annual concert.

Our Horizons Summer Program is an enrichment program to support academically talented students from priority neighbourhoods over a three-year period from grades 7 to 9. The goal is to inspire continued positive community engagement and academic pursuits.

These experiences connect communities across Toronto with the intent to build empathy and connection. They help UCC students develop responsibility and leadership skills, and encourage them to think critically about equity, access and recognizing our shared humanity.
