Introduced in 2013, this program recognizes extraordinary leadership potential
Each year up to 15 scholars are chosen for their academic, athletic and leadership qualities to take part in this program intended to inspire tomorrow’s change-makers.
Lang Scholars are “all-rounders” who embody athletic and academic excellence, as well as the strength of character of the program’s namesake, Stu Lang ’70. Scholars participate in unique enrichment opportunities, including leadership training, conferences and hearing from inspiring guest speakers. The program helps participating scholars grow into confident, capable leaders. In return, they are expected to contribute to College life through mentoring younger athletes and participating in additional community service.

Meet UCC's Lang Scholars
Patrick Cowling ’26
Patrick Cowling ’26
Patrick is the Head of House for Martland’s House where he was a house mentor for two years prior. He’s captain of the varsity lacrosse team, plays on the varsity football team and was recognized as the CISAA Football All Star in the ‘24-’25 school year. Additionally, Patrick founded the long-term care visitation club and serves as an editor of the College Film newsletter. His favourite subjects include film and English. He also plays club lacrosse and volunteers with the Special Olympics in a program that provides people with mental disabilities with sporting opportunities. Next year, Patrick wishes to win CISAA lacrosse.
Daniel Devine ’26
Daniel Devine ’26
A Prefect in Seaton’s house, Daniel plays on the varsity hockey, varsity lacrosse, and junior varsity hockey teams, and outside of school, he plays OSFL football. His favourite subjects are math and business, and outside of school, he enjoys spending time with his family and coaching younger kids in his part-time job as a lifeguard. His goal this year is to continue improving his French oral skills, and he is considering a career in either teaching or firefighting.
Laurence Fiorini ’26

A member of Bremner’s House, Laurence is this year’s Athletic Steward and plays for the varsity soccer and basketball teams. He is the co-head of the Italian heritage club and a member of the politics and ethics club. He’s a past recipient of the Class of ‘59 trophy, Principal’s List, and Athlete of the Year. Lawrence has worked with Jordana's Rainbows Foundation, leading the annual holiday gift card drive and raising more than $50,000 for childhood cancer research. His favourite subjects include economics and global politics and this year he hopes to help build championship-winning teams and is looking to pursue a career in economics or finance.
Derek Gu ’26
Derek Gu ’26
Derek is a member of Scadding’s house and is this year’s Wellbeing Steward. He plays on the varsity volleyball and varsity swimming teams and is the co-president of UCC’s DECA club, head of the UCC Senior Jazz Band, and volunteers at Holland Bloorview Hospital. In his free time, Derek enjoys providing barber services to others. In the coming year, Derek wishes to make a better impact on the UCC community through leadership in both sports and academics and hopes to contribute to positive initiatives in his role as the Wellbeing Steward. His favourite subjects are math and business, and after graduation, Derek hopes to pursue a business career.
Elliot Lascelles ’26
Elliot Lascelles ’26
A Howard’s House Prefect, Elliot plays on the varsity baseball and track and field teams. He has been a recipient of the Athlete of the Year, General Proficiency, Principal’s List and Academic Tie awards, and is a recipient of the Duke of Edinburgh Award (having completed his Bronze and Silver Awards). Elliot is part of the politics and ethics club and has been a member of the academic council and the helping hands club. Outside of school, Elliot plays elite baseball in the Canadian Premier Baseball League for the Toronto Mets and is also a member of Canada’s Junior National Team. In his spare time, Elliot enjoys watching the Golden State Warriors (NBA) and playing video games. This year, Elliot looks forward to winning CISAAs for the third time in a row as part of the varsity baseball team. Elliot has committed to Yale University to study and play Division 1 baseball as a student-athlete.

An Orr's house Prefect, Matthew is part of the varsity football, rugby and track and field teams and was the varsity Rookie of the Year in 2025. Outside of the College, he runs track at the University of Toronto Track and Field Club. Matthew’s extracurricular activities include acting in school plays, serving as an executive on the sports analytics club and being a member of the world partnerships organization. His favourite subjects are business, sports sciences and English. In his free time, Matthew goes for runs and listens to music. He hopes to pursue a career in either athletics or business entrepreneurship.

Head of Wedd’s house, Daniel is a member of both the varsity basketball and varsity track and field teams. He’s always looking to improve his sports ability and received the Most Improved award for the varsity basketball team for the ‘24-’25 school year. He’s the co-head of the Christian culture association and a member of the black excellence society. Daniel also participates in theatre productions, music and the Model United Nations. In his free time, Daniel enjoys playing piano and going for walks. His favourite subject is economics, and in the future he hopes to pursue a career in law, business or public speaking.
Brodie Thompson ’26
Brodie Thompson ’26
A Mowbray house Prefect, Brodie Thomson plays on the football, basketball and rugby teams and was Athlete of the Year for 2023-2024. Off the field, his favourite subjects are biology and sports science. He is an executive of the sports analytics club and a member of the medical society. In his free time, Brodie enjoys practising French and reading history books. This year he started and is the head of the mahjong club. After graduating, Brodie is hoping to study medicine or kinesiology.
Hudson Vandermeer ’26
Hudson Vandermeer ’26
A member of McHugh’s house and this year’s Learning Steward, Hudson plays on the varsity football team and the varsity track and field team, and also plays U18 OSFL tackle football outside the school. In Year 11, Hudson was awarded the Team Lineman of the Year and CISAA All-Star for his efforts on the varsity football team. In Year 8, 9, and 10, Hudon received the General Proficiency Award and was on the Principal’s List. He’s the co-head of the financial literacy club, editor for The Blue and White, a contributor to Quiddity, and a member of the Christian student alliance. During his spare time he enjoys spending time with friends and writing poetry, and this year hopes to grow as an athlete and as a teammate, keep up his academic standing and give back through mentorship in his leadership roles. After UCC, Hudson hopes to pursue a career in finance, business, or law.

A member of Wedd’s house, Ryker is a Lang National Scholar from Ajax, Ontario. At UCC, he plays on the varsity lacrosse and hockey teams, and outside of the College, he plays lacrosse for the Canada Development Team, Junior Lacrosse and Evolve Elite Lacrosse. His favourite subjects are math and science. In his free time, he enjoys hanging out with friends and playing Roblox with the younger kids in the boarding house. His goals this year include becoming a key contributor on the hockey team and maintaining a competitive academic average. After UCC, Ryker is looking to pursue a career in either engineering or business.
JJ Feehely ’27
JJ Feehely ’27
A member of Mowbray's house, JJ is on the varsity volleyball, basketball and track teams and won the Year 9 Athlete of the Year award. He also plays on an Ontario Basketball League X team outside of UCC. He’s a member of the truth and reconciliation commission, the wellbeing council, the pluralism council, the athletic council, and is head of the blue hearts mental health club. JJ is works as a part-time math tutor during the school year and volunteers at a summer sports camp for kids. He enjoys outdoor activities and playing the piano and his favourite subjects are math, English, science, music, and product design. JJ looks forward to pursuing a career in engineering, business, or law.

A member of Mowbray's house, Duncan is a varsity soccer and track athlete and also plays on a nationally ranked soccer team outside of UCC. He is the head of the BIPOC affinity group and the co-head of the soccer analysis club. His favourite subjects are math and English. During the summer, Duncan is a soccer coach at UCC’s day camps. In his free time, he likes to listen to music, and next year he hopes to grow into leadership roles within his teams while maintaining strong academic results. In the future, Duncan hopes to study finance and business in his post-secondary education.
Charles Paterson ’27
Charles Paterson ’27
A mentor and member of Scadding’s House, Charles plays on the varsity baseball and varsity cross country teams and received the General Proficiency award in Years 8, 9, and 10. Additionally, he won the Class of ’57 trophy. This is his second consecutive year as a Learning and Service Representative for his class. Extracurricularly, Charles is a member of the BlueNotes, takes part in both Model United Nations and the World Affairs Conference, and is the co-head of the truth and reconciliation club. Outside of school, he’s the assistant captain of the Toronto Eagles A hockey team. His favourite subject in school is history because of the conversations it sparks. In his spare time, Charles enjoys playing guitar and going fishing. Charles' goal this upcoming year is to continue balancing athletics and growing in his leadership roles. After UCC, Charles hopes to pursue business with a focus on business as a tool for good.

A member of Wedd’s House, Phenwick joins the College from Bedford, Nova Scotia as a Lang National Scholar. He’s part of the varsity hockey and baseball teams. He enjoys spending his free time relaxing in nature and his favourite subjects are English and biology. His goal this year is to work hard and accomplish a championship in both hockey and baseball in addition to keeping up with his academics and achieving a competitive average. After UCC, Phenwick hopes to pursue a career in entrepreneurship or carpentry.

Conover Van Iperen ’28
A member of Wedd's house, Conover is a Lang National Scholar from Delta, British Columbia. He’s a member of both the varsity lacrosse team and the varsity football team. During the summer, Conover plays junior lacrosse for the Delta Islanders and played with Fusion West Elite Lacrosse club this past summer. His favourite subjects are social sciences and physics, and he enjoys learning about different cultures. His goal this year is to further develop his time management skills while balancing sports and academics. After UCC, he is interested in community, social service, and coaching.
Max Zumbo ’28
Max Zumbo ’28
A member of Seaton’s House, Max joins the College from Kelowna, British Columbia, as a Lang National Scholar. Max is part of the varsity lacrosse and football teams. Back home, Max plays on the provincial box lacrosse team. He enjoys spending his free time playing pickleball and going to the gym and his favourite classes are science and social studies. Max’s goal this year is to excel in all of his classes, in addition to making a provincial field lacrosse team, playing junior lacrosse, and experiencing Toronto. After UCC, Max hopes to pursue a career in sports medicine or law.

A member of Seaton's House, Damian is a Lang National Scholar joining the College from Middle Cove, Newfoundland. He’s part of the varsity hockey team and the varsity track team. His extracurricular interests include art and film, and his favourite subjects are math and history. His goal for this school year is to balance high academic achievement with strong performance in sports. Damian is always looking to meet new people and take on any new learning opportunities. He hopes to become a professional hockey player one day.
