The U16 Blues dropped their first game of the 2018-19 campaign.
After a tight scoreless first period with both teams trading chances and a narrow shots advantage (8-5) for SMCS, the Blues experienced a very tough 2nd period.
St. Michael's came out hitting and forcing the play, leading to penalty trouble for the Blues and an eventual 19-5 shots advantage. With this many shots and power plays, the result was inevitable. SMCS led 4-0 after the 2nd stanza.
After a passionate pep talk by coach Choptiany, the Blues came out hard in the 3rd. UCC 'man of the match' Matthew Grudzinski was particularly effective. His hard work down low led to a top shelf goal by Jack Kedwell to cut the lead to 4-1. Unfortunately for the Blues, the intensity could not be sustained and St. Mike's turned on the jets again, scoring 3 more goals in the final frame while capitalizing on all of the Blues' lapses.
Safe to say this was a lesson with respect to how the Blues need to grow in order to contend in March.
The Blues return to action next Wednesday, January 23rd, at home to SAC's A team.
