Harold A.D. Roberts Circle

Membership in the Harold A.D. Roberts Circle is awarded annually in recognition of substantial contributions or special service by members of the UCC Association, either through short- or long-term commitment. It recognizes those who go “above and beyond” the call of duty to significantly improve the UCC Association and the College. 

This honour complements the John D. Stevenson Award and recognizes outstanding contributions to our community.

  • A Tribute to “Mr. UCC”

    This honour is named for Harold A.D. Roberts, a member of the class of 1915, who was known as “Mr. UCC.” Roberts' record of service to UCC stretches more than eight decades, including being a member of the Board of Governors for 18 years. A UCC ambassador-at-large, he helped to place some 2,000 alumni in jobs, a task he began during the Depression.

    2022
    Evan is from the Class of 1973 and his roles includes class co-president, Old Times contributor, Common Ties alumni mentorship program and Common Ties committee chair.

    2022
    Parent of Wilson ’19 and Lachlan ’23, Jane's roles include Parents' Organization president, Grandparents' Day volunteer, Festive Marketplace Committee and A-Day Steering Committee.

  • Connie Carmichael

    2022
    Parent of John ’24, Connie's roles include Prep Parents' Organization president, class parent, Festive Marketplace auction co-chair and A-Day steering committee.

    "In everything Constance does, she brings a world-class attitude and effort. Whether it's a bake sale, working to set a record for parent engagement levels, or fundraising in the Festive auction, Connie is working to provide her best effort and output in every role she plays.   • Peter Gordon ’07

    2022
    From the Class of 2007, Peter's roles includes Central Park Alumni Hockey Tournament coordinator.

    "The two-day event serves as a focal point for Old Boys in the N.Y. area to congregate in a feel-good way. Players young and old don the blue sweater with pride, and local alums are joined by teammates from near and far. Pete's ongoing commitment to this event and the College is exemplary, and for turning this smallish tourney into a community highlight, he should be commended."

  • Dr. Liza Murrell

    2021
    Clinical psychologist Murrell balances her professional obligations with volunteer work, and the College has been one of the beneficiaries.

    Parent of Sabastian 16 and Nolan 21, Murrell has been volunteering at UCC since 2003. She’s currently the volunteer coordinator for the Parents’ Organization and has been a member of its executive since 2013. Murrell has also served as chair, vice-chair and member of the Prep Parents’ Organization executive. As a past member of the Association Council, Murrell was chair of the Association Day committee, worked on the awards committee, and served as a member of the Blues Booster Club. 

    "Liza is the finest volunteer, a phenomenal human being, and an amazing ambassador for UCC," wrote one of her nominators.

    Murrell's varied UCC endeavours have also included serving as both a Form and Year rep, and volunteering at A-Day, bake sales, Grandparents' Day, and the New Parent Welcome. 

    Says Murrell, "It is truly an honour to be nominated by so many exceptional volunteers both past and present. This award is an expression of the support and sense of community that I have experienced over the last eighteen years at UCC, and I sincerely thank you.”

  • Elissa Fingold

    2021
    As the spouse of an Old Boy (David ’85) and mother to two young Old Boys (Maxwell ’17 and Joseph ’20), Elissa Fingold began serving as a volunteer with UCC in 2009, working to ensure that the College thrives.

    "I’m honoured and delighted by this recognition," says Fingold. "It was a wonderful way to champion the boys, participate in school life and get to know UCC’s vibrant community. I’m particularly grateful for the friendships and connections I made during my time there." 

    Fingold served as chair and vice-chair of the Arts Booster Club from 2016 to 2019 and has been the music representative since 2015. She’s volunteered for Association Day since 2014 and was a member of the 2019–2020 A-Day steering committee. Fingold is a past member of both the Prep Parents' Organization — where she represented Year 5 and Year 7 — and the Parents’ Organization. She was also an organizer for the 2018 and 2019 Mother and Son evenings. In addition, she helped to organize the Nuit Bleue Languages Café, volunteers at the Used Blues Shop and has written for UCC's website.
     
     "As fellows in the UCC community, we cannot emphasize how beloved she is and how proud of her we are," wrote Fingold’s nominators. “She is far more comfortable behind the scenes and shuns the limelight. All of the volunteering she has ever done has always been about celebrating the boys and their successes. Elissa's contribution has always been with the goal of making the students' experience at UCC as inspirational as possible.”

  • Jennifer Bell

    2021
    Jennifer Bell, the wife of an Old Boy (Robert ’75) and parent of two young Old Boys, volunteered her time generously to UCC while Matthew ’13 and Jeremy ’17 were students and continued volunteering after their graduation.
     
    "I’m so touched by the honour of being one of the recipients of this year’s Harold A. D. Roberts Circle Awards," says Bell. "It has been my absolute pleasure to contribute to our wonderful community through volunteering. I love the school, and love every minute of volunteering there. UCC has been my home away from home."

    Bell was the Arts Booster Club's languages and film representative and a member of its executive from 2014 to 2017. She volunteered in the Prep's Wilder Library, at the Nuit Bleue arts festival, as a Class Parent, and at Association Day. She was a Year and House rep in the Upper School, and a Festive Marketplace volunteer. Other wide-ranging endeavours included membership on the UCC refugee sponsorship committee, working at the sports shop, and serving as a liaison for several parents new to the College.
     
    "Volunteering at UCC was a full-time job and a labour of love for Jennifer," wrote one of her nominators. "During her ten years as a UCC mom, Jennifer never stopped volunteering. She never said no to volunteer jobs and she did them all with enthusiasm and warmth."

  • Michael Annecchini ’03

    2021
    Annecchini is the manager of global partnerships for Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, the organization that owns the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Toronto Raptors. 

    The 2003 class president since graduation, Annecchini has been a member of the Association Day steering committee since 2009. He co-founded the Michael E. Jurist 03 Memorial Tennis Tournament with former intermediate division head Derek Poon that same year, and he remains involved with its planning and execution. He's also a past member of the reunion planning committee and the Young Alumni Network.

    "I’m very honoured to join the Harold A.D. Roberts Circle," says Annecchini. "Starting the Jurist tournament felt like the least I could do in Michael’s memory. More than a decade later, it’s been humbling to see it grow into a staple on the A-Day calendar. In the process, we’ve been able to raise money for our Michael E. Jurist (Class of 2003) Fund, providing financial assistance to deserving students." 
     
    One of Annecchini’s nominators shared his appreciation of Annecchini’s contributions, writing, "His generosity of time and patience, his ongoing friendship and sense of duty have never wavered. Mike is the 'face' of the Class of 2003."

  • Verena Dong Simone Odendaal

    Verena Dong and Simone Odendaal

    2020
    Dong and Odendaal have been volunteers at UCC since their younger sons, both 2020 grads, entered the school in Year 3. Both women are members of the Parents’ Organization and past members of the Prep Parents’ Organization.
     
    “From their early days at UCC, they both eagerly became involved in Prep School life as class reps, bake sale co-ordinators, PPO Arts Appreciation liaisons, and library, Prep Shop and A-Day volunteers,” writes a nominator. “In these roles, they always promoted community spirit.” 

    Both also served as the PO’s TUBS co-coordinators for the past three years, overseeing volunteers, hosting monthly volunteers’ lunches and raising extra money for TUBS at Festive Marketplace. 
     
    “For the past nine years, this dynamic duo has gone ‘above and beyond the call of duty,’ making outstanding contributions to UCC,” says a nominator. “In all their different volunteer capacities, their focus has always been on improving both the student experience and the parent volunteer experience, thereby significantly improving the UCC Association and the College community. Simone and Verena are selfless, dedicated volunteer role models, who lead by example.”

  • George McNeillie '70 Allen Meredith '70

    George McNeillie '70 and Allen Meredith '70

    2020
    McNeillie, a member of the Advertising Review Board of Ontario, and Meredith, president of A.E. Meredith Real Estate Ltd., have been co-presidents of their class since graduation. This is their 50th year holding these positions. 

    The pair played on the UCC varsity football team together, McNeillie as quarterback. They’ve worked on behalf of the class ever since, striving tirelessly to maintain strong connections among classmates and foster a spirit of giving back to the College. 

    McNeillie and Meredith initiated the class’ financial assistance fund with contributions now reaching $250,000. And for a 45th anniversary class gift, they arranged for Laidlaw Hall’s carved and painted school crest. 

    “They have engendered and encouraged financial gifts to UCC,” writes one of their Harold A.D. Roberts Circle Award nominators. “They are great cheerleaders for their fellow classmates and have facilitated quarterly dinner events for a number of years to maintain and strengthen the friendships made at UCC that have now stretched beyond 50 years.”

    Adds another nominator, “George and Al have more than sustained a level of continuing camaraderie among their classmates, one well beyond any expected norm. Their success rests on their bringing a sense of humour, imagination, and initiative in advancing the interests of past and future generations of students, such as the class scholarship fund.”

    McNeillie is a member of UCC’s legacy giving society Our Third Century, following in the footsteps of his great-grandfather, grandfather and father at UCC. Meredith attended the College along with his brothers David ’72 and Grahame ’80.

  • Sarah Morgenstern

    2020
    Morgenstern, director of business development for Cubane Consulting, is president of the UCC Parents’ Organization (PO) and has been a volunteer at the College since 2009. She previously served as the special events chair for the Prep Parents’ Organization (PPO) and as the new parents’ event co-ordinator. Morgenstern has also been a grade rep, Blues Booster Club member, an A-Day and Festive Marketplace volunteer, and a Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day committee member. She and her husband are strong financial supporters of UCC.
     
    “Sarah has been a beacon of positivity,” write her nominators. “As the PO president, she has led the PO though COVID-19 with empathy, authenticity, love and has been a voice of reason.

    “Her fantastic organization and communication skills have contributed to so many successful events and brought together members of the UCC community to make it that much stronger. For many years, she has been our ‘go-to’ person – if you need to know something or get something done, she will always take the call.”

    Morgenstern’s son, Adam is a member of the class of 2020.

  • Ken Tanenbaum

    2020
    Tanenbaum, vice-chair of Kilmer Van Nostrand, is an honorary trustee of the UCC Foundation and has served on the College’s board of governors twice: from 2007–2012 and from 2015–2019, including a stint as vice-chair in 2017–18 and membership on a number of board committees. A philanthropic supporter of the College, Ken was also a member of the Think Ahead Campaign cabinet from 2010 to 2012. 

    “Ken served two non-successive terms on the board under four different board chairs and his contributions were enormous,” writes his nominator. “He served on numerous board sub-committees and continues to help out in this capacity.

    “His affinity and love for the College is deeply rooted in a profound respect for our values, or as he puts it, ‘the enduring commitment UCC has to Canada’s potential.’ Beyond this, he has always been quick to volunteer time and resources when asked, and he is, and will continue to be, a lifelong supporter.”

    All three of Tanenbaum’s sons have attended or currently attend the College. Jack graduated in 2018 and Ethan in 2020; Dylan will graduate in 2022.

  • Azam Dawood '89

    2019
    Working with former long-time faculty member Derek Poon and current faculty member Andrew MacDougall, Azam has worked passionately as an assistant coach for the varsity tennis team for more than 12 years. He’s the perfect example of finding a niche in which he can share an interest, then volunteering to the maximum. Finding many hours to dedicate each season, he supports the boys by attending practices and matches, even going with the team on its annual trip to the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey.

    “Azam knows the game extremely well and adds good insight for the players in terms of technical skills and tactical strategies,” says his nomination. Moreover, Dawood has also found time to serve as a grade rep, a Prep Parents’ Organization volunteer and a Common Ties mentor.  

    Azam is an Old Boy and the parent of Zach ’19 and Ethan ’22.

  • Carolyn Everson

    2019
    Involved in the UCC community for more than 14 years, Carolyn has served in countless roles including as a member of both the Parents’ Organization and the Prep Parents’ Organization over more than a decade, and the steering committee for both the Believe in Blue Gala and the Ice Blue Auction.

    A role model to many, she “is always positive, brings energy to any meeting and always praises the contributions of others,” says her nomination. She is also always ready to go above and beyond. For example, one anecdote goes, when the PO was looking to fill vacancies, many were specific in their requested roles, “Carolyn simply stated she would take on whatever duties were needed; that was a reflection of her commitment.”   
    Carolyn has also volunteered with the library, admissions, Horizons, Grandparent's Day and grad rings. As a member of the Association Council for six years she served as vice chair and has been chair of the awards program’s task force and the awards committee.

    Carolyn is the parent of Andrew ’17.

  • Peter Frost

    2019
    For more than two decades, Peter has dedicated time as a volunteer coach of the varsity squash team. Although professionally retired now, Peter spent many years balancing a family, his job in finance and working with our boys in the squash program. “He is a terrific role model for our boys, having played a high level of squash himself,” says his nomination. “The amount of time over those years he has sacrificed on behalf of our boys is exemplary.” Frost continues to coach the team.

  • Matt Johnson '95

    2019
    Matt has spent the better part of two decades volunteering at UCC, including founding the Young Alumni Network, and acting as chair for many years; he was Old Boy chair for Association Day, a longtime member of the Association Council, and most recently, president of the Association Council until his term ended this past year.  Matt continues his involvement today as past President of the Association Council while sitting on the Council’s Governance committee.

    His service to the College includes working with the Blues Booster Club and acting as a member of the reunion planning committee and the property sub-committee. His nomination arrived in the form of a detailed spreadsheet with lots and lots of cells full of information - sometimes the track record speaks for itself.

  • Franca Peri

    2019
    From the moment her sons Robert and John joined UCC in 2009, Franca worked tirelessly for the student athletes, not only for the teams on which her sons have played but all teams. She’d haul cases of beverages and snacks to every game without expecting anything in return.  A volunteer for the Used Blues Shop (TUBS), Franca would come early to set out snacks for boys, in case they missed breakfast. “Over the years the boys and staff would simply come in to say hello and let me know how they were doing; they became regulars,” she says. Also a member of the Parents’ Organization, Association Day’s silent auction co-chair, the Arts Booster Club’s treasurer and a team parent co-ordinator for the Blues Booster Club, she considered all UCC boys her family.

    “If Franca owned a castle, she would be in the trenches helping the hired staff,” says her nomination for this award. “Tireless, passionate and a caring volunteer; that’s Franca.”  

    Franca is the mother of John ’17 and Robert ’19.

  • Lisa Assaf

    2018
    Lisa Assaf is the mother of Mohamad ’17 and Zain '21. She’s co-chaired the Blues Booster Club (BBC) with fellow 2018 Harold A.D. Roberts Circle Award recipient Carita Sheehy for the past two years. Assaf was also BBC vice-chair for a year and a BBC team parent coordinator and parent representative before that. She was a Prep class rep and a Year 12 rep who organized graduation wear. Assaf has also served on the Association Day, Winterfest, Varsity Day, Believe in Blue and UCC Syrian refugee committees.

  • Bob Dameron ’75

    2018
    Bob Dameron had a large contingent of people who nominated him for the award on the strength of his contributions as a class president. Primarily because of his initiative and energy, the Class of ’75 has established a mental health and wellness fund that has sponsored professional development for faculty and staff and supported a student-led conference on mental health issues. 

    “It is quite heartwarming to see how one Old Boy can galvanize his class towards supporting such an important contemporary issue,” says Rodger Wright ’70 of Dameron’s efforts on behalf of mental health.

  • Jody Howe

    2018
    Jody has been been an active volunteer at UCC for more than 10 years. She was vice-chair and chair of the Prep Parents’ Organization and went on to head the Parents' Organization after that. Howe was on the Association Council and has volunteered her services for Association Day, Festive Marketplace, Grandparents Day and the BBC over the years. She is the mother of Jason '19.

  • Carita Sheehy

    2018
    Carita Sheehy is the mother of Ryan ’15, Cameron ’17, and Matthew ’20. In addition to her many contributions to the Blues Booster Club, she’s taken on 20 different responsibilities over the years — including spearheading “New to Blue” parent handbooks for incoming families. Her other responsibilities have included serving: as TUBS chair; on the PPO and PO; with the fine wine auction committee for the Believe in Blue gala; as a class and house rep; on the Mother’s Day project; on the Association Day, Winterfest and Varsity Day committees; and doing communications for Festive Marketplace.

    2017
    A key driving force behind UCC’s boarding program, Martin Abell ’81 has helped raise funds to ensure generations of future boarders enjoy enhanced facilities, access to weekend programs and financial assistance awards. He also chaired the boarding reunion planning committee and was a member of its recruitment advisory committee, and served as a Common Ties mentor.

  • Laurie Bellamy

    2017
    A UCC volunteer for almost 15 years, Laurie is the mother of Ryan ’12, Lucas ‘15, Bradley ’17 and Sean ’19. Her volunteer roles included class rep, helping with multiple Association Days and May Days, membership on the Association Council for six years and involvement on both the Prep Parents’ and Parents’ Organizations from 2003 through 2016.

  • Laura Dallal

    2017
    Nominated for this award by a cheering squad of 18, Laura is mom to twins Benjamin and Nathaniel McLean ’17. Known for her role in championing all that’s arts-related, Laura played a huge role in the success of such Arts Booster Club (ABC) events as Nuit Bleue and the mother-son dinner theatres. She was the ABC chair for two years, in which she launched the student “arts captain” position. In addition, she was co-vice-chair of debating, supported the Horizons swim program as well as Association Day and the Believe in Blue Gala.

  • Susan Farrow Hutcheson

    2017
    Susan is the embodiment of the phrase, “If you want a job done, give it to a busy person.” Mother to Trevor ’17, Susan left a legacy of initiatives over her eight years as a UCC volunteer. Her eye for beauty transformed the Arts Booster Club events and she launched the inaugural UCC spirit band, spent countless hours compiling the “Farewell to Cookie” book and initiated the “arts tie” for boys. She was a co-chair of the Arts Booster Club, a Blues Booster Club photographer, Festive Marketplace co-chair, and long-term member of both the Prep Parents and Parents Organizations, among other roles.

  • Alexander C. Pathy ’51

    2017
    Alec Pathy ’51 began his lifelong affiliation with the College in 1940, when he became a boarder in Form 1 at the Prep. However, it wasn’t until 60 years later than he started giving back so generously, encouraging former classmates to contribute to two scholarships named for former teachers, and endowing another in his own name. Alec joined the Association Council in 2011 and rarely misses a UCC event — wearing a UCC bow-tie custom-made from two silk, UCC-crested ties. Alec has also been an Association Council taskforce volunteer and a mentor for the Common Ties program.

  • Karen Arnone

    2016
    Karen Arnone is the mother of Andrew ’16 and held more than 15-plus volunteer roles at UCC including Prep Parents vice-president and president, co-chair of the Festive Marketplace, Gala Committee member, and Upper School house rep. Year after year, Karen was counted on as a great collaborator on a diverse range of activities and events, a tireless Association Day volunteer, and a friendly face in the halls.

  • Scott Barter ’04

    2016
    An Old Boy from the Class of 2004, Scott’s passion for educating youth about alcohol and drug abuse prevention has inspired students and faculty. In addition to speaking to individual health classes, Scott worked closely with Director of Athletics Brent McKay and Nurse Avia Peacock to facilitate support groups for students through the Health Centre. Scott has made a huge difference in the lives of UCC boys by helping tackle this critically important topic head-on with compassion and understanding.

  • Barbara Bottini

    2016
    Barbara was the backbone of the parent organizations at both the Prep and Upper School. Her myriad of volunteer roles included Parents’ Organization president, vice-president and president of the Parents’ Organization Executive Committee, Association Day co-chair, head of the Nutrition Committee, and Arts Booster Club board chair. Her son Mattia graduated in 2016.

  • Richard Phillips ’85

    2016
    Richard Phillips ’85 is a shining example of giving back to the College. He played a series of pivotal volunteer leadership roles starting in 1999, when he joined the UCC Foundation’s Investment Committee. That led to a position on the Board of Trustees in 2004. As president of the UCC Foundation from 2009 to 14, Richard juggled participation on several sub-committees, the Boarding Task Force, and the Think Ahead Campaign cabinet.

  • Amelia Rattew

    2016
    Amelia is a consummate and devoted champion of the College. Across her varied volunteer work at the school, she’s known for her unflagging optimism, humour, and commitment to achieving the highest standard in everything she does — and motivating others to do the same. Amelia’s many roles included co-chair of TUBS and the Arts Booster Club, Theatre Rep, rowing team photographer, and volunteer for the Festive Marketplace.

  • Jill Adolphe

    2015
    Jill has been a volunteer at UCC for more than a decade and was awarded the 2017-18 John D. Stevenson Award. 

    Adolphe is the 2018-19 co-president of UCC's Parents Organization (PO) and mother to twins Nicholas and Alexander ’17 and Christopher ’20. Her dedication to the College has been an inspiration to so many for 11 years.

    Among her achievements, she’s been both a form and year rep, team parent, served as committee member for the PPO, the PO, the Blue Ties Gala and Grandparents’ Day. She was Association Day committee co-chair twice and both vice-chair and chair of the Prep Parents Organization. She introduced and chaired the Blue Ties Breakfast and co-chaired the inaugural Year 7 graduation committee at the Prep and was a member of Association Council for six years.

  • Rajbir Ahluwalia

    2015
    Raj is the parent of Simran ’12 and Harkirat ’15 and found her own path of voluntarism at the College through her photography. Raj served on both the Blues Booster Club and the Arts Booster Club.
     
    Through her beautiful photographs, Raj documented life at the College since 2008 when her older son joined UCC. Be it a sport event, an art show, a music concert, a theatre performance, or a parent organization gathering, Raj and her camera were there to capture the moment, thus providing an invaluable service to the UCC community with what she does best: photography.

  • Neera Chopra

    2015
    Neera is the parent of Savinay ’14 and held many countless positions at the College including President of the Parents’ Organization in 2013-14. She was a committee volunteer for the Blue Ties Gala and served on the 2012 Fine Wine Auction committee. She was one of the early members of the Arts Booster Club and served as Chair in 2012-13. Of particular importance and a source of pride for Neera was her founding of Nuit Bleue which has become an integral part of the Upper School and of arts at the College.

    Susan Eplett is the mother of Old Boys Richard, Matthew, Charlie and Robert Walker. She is a committed, passionate advocate and promoter of the arts at UCC and through the Arts Booster Club celebrated the boys who are excited about visual arts, theatre, film, debate, model UN, music and writing. One of her significant legacies at the College is the “arts and academic achievement award” which launched in the fall of 2015. In addition, Susan also initiated the first mother-son dinner-theatre event at UCC.

  • Ann Hastie

    2014
    The mother of Richard Hastie ’14, Ann was a UCC volunteer for 12 years and held many roles in both the PPO and PO, including treasurer for both, grad memorabilia chair of the PPO and chair of facilities for the PO. She’s volunteered for three UCC galas and was the treasurer of the 2012 fine wine auction.

  • Frances Lee

    2014
    The mother of Christopher ’12, Calvin ’15 and Charles ’16, Frances has served in numerous volunteer positions at UCC, most notably as president of the PO and co-chair (with her husband Edward) of the 2012 fine wine auction. Both of these roles required an enormous amount of time, effort and commitment to the school, and Lee was consistently recognized for her professionalism, willingness to tackle anything that comes her way and ability to always get the job done.

  • Fabio Savoldelli ’80

    2014
    Fabio Savoldelli ’80 has been a UCC volunteer for more than 20 years. He’s been a member of the U.S. Foundation Board since 2001 and its chair since 2008. He has been president of the UCC Association branch in New York and helped rejuvenate the College’s presence there by founding it with a couple of other Old Boys in 1989. Savoldelli is known for his sense of humour and his continued commitment to UCC and strengthening the Old Boy network.

    Bob is the father of Andrew ’95 and John ’97 and is a class president who set a high standard for others in keeping his classmates connected to one another and the College. He served on various UCC committees and chaired signature UCC events, including Association Day and Founder’s Dinner.

    The mother of Andrew ’09 and Michael ’11, Sandy volunteered at the Prep and as vice-president of UCC's Association Council. She’s a past president of the Parents’ Organization (PO) and served as a volunteer on the Blues Booster Club (BBC) board, with Horizons, admissions, the library, and in many other ways.

    The mother of Marco ’08, Alexander ’11 and Nicholas ’13, Piera served as head of both the PO and the Prep Parents’ Organization (PPO). She’s volunteered with many school events, including three galas, and was a member of the Association Council.

  • Linda Pincott-Kitchen

    2013
    Linda is the mother of Andrew ’09 and Adam ’12 and served as chair of the PPO, on the PO executive committee, on the BBC board and on three gala committees. She also opened her home to many UCC events, including the PO’s annual faculty and staff appreciation tea for more than 12 years. In addition, she was one of the originators of UCC’s Spring Arts Festival (now known as Nuit Bleue).

  • Lincoln Caylor ’87

    2012
    Lincoln played a formative role in the Barbara Barrow Foundation and increased the amount of funding that each student receives and initiating the funding for and launch of a website and video to promote the legacy of Miss Barbara A. Barrow, school nurse from 1938 to 1980. Lincoln also served on the boarding and the long range planning sub-committee, the boarding task force and the governance and nominating sub-committee of the board. He’s supported the Common Ties mentoring program by being a mentor and an event host. He joined the board of governors in 2012.

  • Hugh Innes ’72

    2012
    As chair of the transfer funding review committee, Hugh Innes authored the “Convergence Report” designed to demonstrate the impact of the correlation between investment returns, the transfer rate and tuition fee increases. This report served to increase awareness among the governing bodies of the College and the UCC Foundation of the important relationship between the school’s priorities and the growth of the foundation’s assets. He’s a class president, has served on the class president task force of the Association Council, was a trustee of the UCC Foundation from 2000 to 2009 after becoming a member of the foundation’s investment committee in 1991, and has supported many other committees of the College and the foundation.

  • Michael and Hampton ’95 Long

    2012
    Michael and his son Hampton Long ’95 are past hosts of the New York branch reception. The family is extremely supportive of boarding at UCC and initiated two donor challenges targeted to donors in the United States. Michael served as a trustee of the U.S. Foundation and was on the principal’s advisory committee. Hampton was a trustee of the U.S. Foundation, served on the boarding campaign cabinet and on the boarding recruitment advisory committee.

  • Elena Soni

    2012
    Elena Soni’s made many contributions to the College including transforming the way the  Used Blues Shop (TUBS),  was organized by recruiting committed volunteers covering more shifts, running the back-to-school uniform sales, setting up a system to communicate to students and staff about found articles, and recycling unclaimed clothing to charities on a regular basis. Soni also co-initiated the inaugural meeting of interested arts faculty members and parents to discuss the development of what’s now the Arts Booster Club (ABC). She chaired the ABC, recruiting parents to take on roles to support faculty and students’ curricular and co-curricular programming, and to enhance school-wide awareness of each area of the arts. She and her son Jorge co-wrote much of the initial ABC e-newsletters.

  • Karin Lawton

    2011
    The parent of Henry Bloemen ’11 made a significant contribution to the school by recording the life of the College through her photographs. Lawton’s extraordinary photos have been published in the BBC e-newsletter, the ABC e-newsletter, in video montages and on the College’s website. They’ve captured the fun and spirit of athletic events and raised awareness of athletics and the arts at UCC.

    Lawton and her husband Peter-Paul Bloemen are founding members of the BBC. She’s been the source of innovative ideas for Association Day, Winterfest and May Day. She’s one of the driving forces behind the Spirit of Athletics — Blues Awards. Lawton also designed and produced the now ubiquitous Blues fan scarf, the Blue Army flags that accompany the Blue Army wherever they go, the Go Blues banners that are proudly waved by the Blue Army at all major athletic events, and house banners. Her unflagging determination, hard work and commitment have left the school a better place.

  • Peter MacGowan ’77

    2011
    Peter MacGowan is an Old Boy from the class of 1977 and the parent of Skyler ’11. In addition to his longtime contributions to the Association Council and work as a member of the board of governors, he’s had a long and profound impact on the UCC rowing program. As a student, MacGowan was one of the early members of the rowing program at UCC (during a time when UCC rowing came to the fore as a world-class high school program) and, with several teammates, went on to compete for Canada in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.

    When his son Skyler began to row, Peter reconnected with the program and his contribution has been extraordinary. He’s played an active role on the UCC rowing parents’ committee and was instrumental in designing and implementing the safety program for UCC rowing, which is a model for all other high school and university-level programs to emulate. MacGowan has coached UCC crews to several medals at the Canadian Secondary School Rowing Championships and served as president of Hanlan Boat Club, the on-water home of UCC rowing since he and his UCC colleagues first built the facility in the 1970s.

    As a UCC governor, MacGowan is a member of the long range planning sub-committee, the property sub-committee and chair of the governance and nominating sub-committee. He also served on the long range planning committee on Norval.

  • Peter Meltzer ’69

    2011
    Peter Meltzer is responsible for founding the New York City alumni branch and was the branch president for more than 20 years. The New York branch events are among our most successful events and allow an opportunity for Old Boys, most of whom are living away from home, to gather and reunite with old friends.

    Meltzer served as a trustee of the U.S. Foundation for more than 20 years and was chair for 15 years. His steadfast dedication to the College over so many years has been extraordinary.

  • Susan Guichon

    2010
    The parent of Michael ’03, Ryan ’06 and David ’12, Sue volunteered on both the Prep Parents’ Organization and the Parents’ Organization for many years, serving in a variety of roles, including president of both organizations. She volunteered her time for countless UCC events, including Festive Marketplace, Founder’s Dinner, Association Day, the 2004 Ice Blue Gala and the 2007 Blue Ties Gala. She’s been a library volunteer, a rowing volunteer, a member of the boarding task force and a green school advisory council member, to name only a few of her commitments. Sue joined the Association Council in 2003, serving as vice-president, and was appointed to the board of governors in 2011.

  • Stu Lang ’70

    2010
    Stu hold the unique distinction of having made an $11 million gift to UCC's Think Ahead Campaign, the largest in Canadian independent school history. He generously supports and is dedicated to the Lang Scholar program, named in his honour. Stu served as the chair of the athletic review committee, served on the finance and audit sub-committee as well as the principal’s advisory committee. He spent two years as a volunteer coach for varsity football. Stu is the former divisional president and current director of Toronto-based CCL Industries, a world leader in label solutions for global consumer brands. He was the former head football coach at the University of Guelph, where he led the team to a best-ever regular season record in 2012–13. Stu was a member of five Grey Cup-winning teams during an illustrious Canadian Football League career (1974 to 1981) with the Edmonton Eskimos.

  • Pam and Harry Taylor

    2010
    Parents of Ryan ’10 and Connor ’11, the Taylors co-founded and served as presidents of the Blues Booster Club (BBC). They played a leadership role in increasing school spirit within the school and parent communities by increasing awareness of and involvement in the athletic programs in both the Prep and Upper Schools. Pam also worked with the arts program to develop the Arts Booster Club.

  • Charles Wallis (Wally) King ’54

    2009
    Wally King joined the board of governors of the College in 1974 and served for nine years and was a trustee for the UCC Foundation from 1968 to 1973. Apart from King’s publicly known contributions to the life and success of the College, there’s a long series of “behind the scenes” actions which typify his dedication to the College. He was instrumental in ensuring that Colborne’s Legacy, UCC 1829-1979 was published and he planned the sesquicentennial program and reviews of the Battlion. In addition, King has been an advocate for UCC’s boarding program.

  • Martha Shaw

    2009
    Parent of Nick ’09, Stephen ’01, Kip ’99 and David ’98, Martha Shaw has been a member of both the Prep Parents’ Organization and the Parents’ Organization for many years. This began in 1992 and she served in a variety of roles. She’s volunteered her time for countless UCC events, including Festive Marketplace and Association Day. She chaired the 2007 Blue Ties Auction with her husband David, which raised close to $1.5 million for the construction of the The William P. Wilder ’40 Arena & Sports Complex. Shaw was also an instrumental member of the arena campaign fundraising cabinet.

  • David Walker ’51

    2009
    In addition to being class president for decades, Walker led a tireless effort between 1999 and 2001 to raise money from classmates, alumni and friends of the College to establish and endow scholarships in honour of former masters Jay D. MacDonald and James L. Coulton. He raised more than $127,000 for the two scholarships by 2001. In reaching his goals of $50,000 for each scholarship, Walker was able to secure two $50,000 matching grants from the UCC Foundation and the two awards have been providing needs-based financial assistance to UCC students for several years.

  • Andrew Galloway ’87

    2008
    Andrew Galloway ’87 has volunteered his time and knowledge at UCC by speaking to physical education classes on substance abuse and providing counsel through UCC’s Health Centre. In addition, Galloway has been a guest speaker at Upper School assemblies and has used his own personal experiences to facilitate several student discussion groups around teen issues.

  • William Ng

    2008
    Since 2002, when his son Ronald ’08 entered UCC, William Ng attended almost every single UCC event and documented it through photographs. Ng took it upon himself to make a historic account of Association Day, Founder’s Dinner, Spring Arts Festival, school plays, music nights and every grade event possible. Many people in the UCC community were lucky to receive an envelope a few days after an event which included photos for their keeping. Ng also gave the College an album for each of the events he’s attended.

    A sampling of Andy Pringle’s myriad commitments to UCC over the years includes: chairman of the board of governors from 2002 to 2007; president of the UCC Association in 1987 and 1988; chair of the committee that reviewed the International Baccalaureate Programmes; chair of the long-range planning committee from 1991 to 2001; member of the foundation board; and a member of the principal’s advisory council. From co-chairing the first Association Day back in the early 1980s to chairing the boarding task force in 2007–08, the parent of Tony ’02 and Geoff ’04 has given generously of his time and knowledge.

    The parent of DJ ’07 and wife of Rocco ’81 was a tireless volunteer for UCC for more than a decade. Her involvement ranged from organizing the Prep music instrument sale to the roles of vice-chair and chair of the Prep and Upper School parents’ organizations. She chaired the Festive Marketplace and volunteered at the Shades of Blue, Ice Blue and Blue Ties gala auctions.
