U16 Blues Secure Comeback Victory
Mark Hoel & Jon Choptiany
The U16 hockey team defeated SAC "White" 7-4 in their final road game of the season.
On Wednesday February 13th, the U16 hockey team took to the snowy roads for a game against St. Andrew's College "White" in Aurora. The first period was enough to give Coach Chops premature grey hair. After the Blues scored on their first and third shots of the game (goals by Ben Atkinson and Rex McArthur), SAC ran off a string of four unasnwered goals in rapid succession that left our bench searching for answers. The coaches know we have a talented team and the team was challenged to dig themselves out of the hole.
Heading into the 2nd frame, the boys rolled up their sleeves and got back to work. It didn't take long to get the momentum back, as Zain Assaf tipped home a beautiful point shot on the powerplay. Shortly thereafter, captain Edward Moskowitz took control, scoring the tying and go ahead goals. We have seen this display from Edward many times throughout the season and it's always a pleasure to watch. The smooth skating of Moskowitz was supported by big hits from Ryan "Reggie" Reyes and Jack "Sandpaper" Kedwell. Not to be outdone, goalie Dylan "Dyl" Meanchos made a clutch save to preserve the lead with under a minute left and sent us into the dressing room ahead 5-4. Intense!
The 3rd period saw the Blues run into penalty trouble, but solid team defence and Meanchos stood firm. Noah "The Tank" Varga scored a beautiful goal on a power move to the net. Noah is a machine and simply would not be denied on his path to the net. Minutes later, cerebral defenceman Nate Hannam sent a gorgeous stretch pass, blue line to blue line, to streaking forward Luke Pitblado who made no mistake while in all alone and deposited a perfect shot past the SAC netminder.
SAC outshot UCC in the final frame, even though the final shot tally was 36-20 in favour of the Blues. It was a thrilling game to be part of. There were even a few "extra-curricular" activities to add an air of menace to the game, which lead to the ejection of two players. Thankfully all of our players are healthy and returned to Toronto unscathed.
The coaches would like to thank the boys for their effort and being such good travel companions on our hockey adventures this year.
