Looking ahead: The 2020-21 academic year at UCC

We are planning with much enthusiasm — and appropriate caution — for our return to campus. This includes welcoming all students including our boarders at the earliest and safest possible opportunity. We believe having students engaged in on-campus learning is the best way to deliver transformational experiences that will inspire them to pursue their best selves in all that they do.
We continue to align our plans with the direction of health authorities and the Ministry of Education. Our guiding principles are grounded in promoting health and safety, advancing academic excellence, and supporting the wellbeing of our students and community. 

Our learning models will facilitate a safe return to face-to-face learning and the ability to shift program delivery between normal, hybrid and remote forms as needed.

Highlights of our hybrid learning model include the following: 
  • An extensive health and safety plan will be in place to ensure a safe learning and working environment.
  • Student cohorts and class sizes of 15 or fewer will support physical distancing within our campus learning spaces. 
  • Access to campus buildings will be limited to students and employees essential to the delivery of school operations.  
  • Primary students in SK to Year 5 will be returning to campus for instruction every day.
  • Students in Years 6 through 12 will be returning to campus for instruction on alternate days. A schedule of combined in-school and at-home learning will include robust programming for at-home days. 
  • Students will have access to an array of enhanced supports through the Wernham West Centre for Learning, the Health Centre, our wellbeing teams, advising programs, and dedicated and caring faculty and staff. 
  • To deliver the best possible experiences and continuity of learning, the College has invested significantly in technology platforms, including a new Learning Management System as well as classroom cameras and microphones to record and/or stream live lessons. This will create a true hybrid approach to learning, better replicating the classroom experience for all. 
  • The broadest possible co-curricular programming will be offered under the current circumstances. Programming will be implemented in a phased approach in accordance with health guidelines.
  • Day-to-day operations will be modified to support health recommendations including changes to uniform, food services and access to common spaces such as locker rooms. 
  • On-campus attendance will be voluntary. While our preferred model sees all students in class in September, we’re committed to delivering our full Continuous Learning Plan (CLP) remotely, both to accommodate families who may choose to keep their sons at home this fall, and to ensure maximum adaptability with respect to any changing health circumstances.

Over the summer, we'll be hosting parent town halls and staying in regular contact with updates as our plans evolve. We welcome and value your input and insights as we continue to map out our return to campus and invite you to email I’m very much anticipating seeing our students in September.
