UCC remains undefeated, winning the annual Battle of the Blues game against rival Saint Michael's College.
In the annual Battle of the Blues game hosted by the University of Toronto, Upper Canada College faced off against their rival, Saint Michael’s College, for first place in CISAA. Defense was the name of the game in the first quarter. The UCC defense was able to force a fumble on Saint Mike’s first play from scrimmage. The Blues looked to take advantage of the early turnover and began to drive deep into Saint Mike’s territory. However, the Kerry Blues defence was not to be out done forcing a turnover of their own, stopping UCC short on third down. After the first quarter the game was tied at zero.
Upper Canada College opened the scoring minutes into the second quarter, thanks to some nice blocking, on their way to a short touchdown run. The Blues extended their lead to 13-0 midway through the second quarter thanks to a 25-yard touchdown strike. The UCC continued their impressive defensive showing forcing a two-and-out on the ensuing Saint Mike’s possession, leading to a safety, giving the Blues a 15-0 lead. The Kerry Blues would score a field-goal with second remaining in the second quarter to cut the UCC lead to 15-3 at half time.
Both defences held strong in the third, and the game remained 15-3 heading into the final quarter. Behind a strong offensive line and strong execution, the Blues were able to go on a 65-yard drive to score from one-yard out to extend their lead to 22-3 midway through the fourth quarter. On their ensuing drive Saint Mike’s drove the length of the field and scored a one-yard touchdown of their own to cut the UCC lead back to 12 points with four minutes remaining in the game. Each team exchanged defensive stops and Saint Mike’s got the ball back with 30 seconds remaining in the game. On their second play of the possession a Kerry Blues wide receiver was able to sneak in behind the UCC defence and score a 94-yard touchdown catch, cutting the score to 24-17. Saint Mike’s attempted an onside kick, but a UCC returner was able to jump on the short kick and return it all the way for a touchdown to give the Blues a 31-17 lead with just seconds left.
With the win, UCC not only handed Saint Mike’s their first loss of the season, but moved into first place in their division.
