Despite going down early and the rigour of exams, the UCC Varsity Rugby team remained undefeated in CISAA, beating Appleby 33-13 on Wednesday afternoon.

Appleby scored first, capitalising on an uncharacteristic UCC error on their own 10 metre line.  It was easy to see that the Appleby team was fired up.

The Blues showed excellent determination to storm back, scoring five unanswered tries.  Captain Connor McKinney led the scoring with a hat trick - the last of which was absolutely beautiful from the set piece.  Simon Ofiara was rewarded for an excellent kick chase with a try of his own and Jay Wallace managed to crash over on his return from wrist surgery.

The game was a lot closer than the score would indicate, as the Blues scored two very late tries while Appleby was chasing the game.  Once again, however, defence was the highlight as Ben Puskas, Andrew Downing and Alex Munoz were outstanding in weathering a couple of goaline stands.

Hooker Samar Carmack was rightly named Man of the Match for his uncompromising play and his resilience in the face of pressure.

The Blues travel to Trinity College School next week to decide home field advantage for playoffs.
