Year 8 student Ziming Guo recently got to experience a front row seat at Queen’s Park, taking part in the long-standing Page Program.
Ziming served as a page on the floor of the Legislative Chamber, experiencing daily sessions, delivering messages and learning about Ontario’s parliamentary system of government.
The Page Program is designed for outgoing, high-achieving, community-involved students who’ve demonstrated responsibility and leadership. Applications are accepted from across the province, and approximately 150 are chosen to take part each year.
“I was really proud that I was picked,” says Ziming. “And really excited. But I also knew that it was going to be a lot of work, and I had to memorize a lot of information.”
The program has existed since Confederation. Pages are expected to study and learn the faces, names and locations of all the MPPs before arriving at Queen’s Park for their first day. Pages dress in uniform not unlike First Dress at UCC.
Ziming hopes to study medicine. “I think students could benefit from the Page Program, even if they’re not interested in politics,” he says. “Understanding how laws are made and what information impacts those decisions is important.”
Page applications are accepted online twice yearly: from April 15 to June 15, and from September 15 to November 15. More information can be found at the Legislative Assembly website.
