UCC’s varsity soccer team places second in national final

Upper Canada College’s varsity team placed second at the Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS) Senior Soccer Tournament at Rothesay Netherwood School in Rothesay, N.B. from Oct. 11 to 13.
The Blues went undefeated through the round-robin portion of the tournament, with wins over Hillfield-Strahallan College from Hamilton, Ont., Selywn House School from Montreal and the host school.

That unblemished record put the Blues into the quarter-finals, where the team beat Conference of Independent Schools of Ontario Athletic Association rival Trinity College School from Port Hope, Ont. 5-1. Riding that high, the Blues advanced to a semi-final game where it defeated The Country Day School from King City, Ont. 2-0.

A final game for the national championship pitted UCC against St. George’s School from Vancouver. It was a closely contested match that ended with the Blues on the losing end of a 1-0 decision.

UCC’s strong performance at the CAIS tournament should come as no surprise. The team has won the title 10 times since it began in 1991 and has been in the final 17 times. The Blues sat out the tournament twice, and it was also cancelled twice
