Mother's Day Project benefits women's shelters

In yet another amazing UCC community service story, it was the 12th anniversary of the Mother’s Day Project April 30. Spearheaded by past Parents’ Organization President Vivien Cappe and Linda Carvalho, Assistant to the Dean Of Student Life & Wellbeing, dozens of parents from both the Prep and Upper School, along with past parents, created 900 gift bags of toiletries, delivered to 10 shelters for women in crisis. An additional 100 cases of products were also sent.  

"When women are struggling to survive and make ends meet, the luxuries of self care are the first thing they have to sacrifice,” says Cappe. “A simple bag of luxury items like soap and shampoo can do a lot to pick up their spirits and make them feel like the world hasn't forgotten them and somebody does care"

After the delivery, Cappe received calls of thanks, tears over the phone and heartfelt words of appreciation on behalf of clients at shelters including Sistering and Red Door. “The staff continue to be amazed by the generosity of people they don’t know,” she says.

This project was originally created with the support of Jon Wookey ’08, who died tragically, however his legacy of service lives on with this initiative and the annual Wookey Market at Association Day.
