On a soggy afternoon, the JV Football Blues once again faced their foes from Aurora to determine St. Michael's opponent in the CISAA Junior Final. The Blues worked hard all week to prepare for this very important game and we were disappointed to see the game turn out the way that it did; a fate that the boys did not deserve. The game started a little slow as both teams battled the rain and slick conditions. It wasn't until the second quarter that the Saints were able to break through scoring two unanswered touchdowns and a safety taking a 16-0 lead. Offensively the Blues struggled a bit throughout the game but momentum seemed to change a bit when Jason Lee interecepted a pass in the dying seconds of the first half rerturning it for a touchdown cutting the Saints lead to a score of 16-7 heading into the intermission. The Blues defence continued to be stingy making life very difficult for the Saints all afternoon. The Blues had their chances as they returned two punts for touchdowns but had them unfortunately called back due to penalties. In the end the Blues fell short losing the game 22-7 which brought our season to a sad conclusion. Despite this loss, there were some great signs for the Blues as they move forward. There is a talented group of Grade 9 boys who we hope return to the squad next year where we will work to improve on this year's campaign. The coaching staff would like to thank the boys for a great season and hope that they enjoyed the experience enough to stay with the program for years to come.
As the JV Football exited their bus and prepared for their match, little did they know that their match would take place on the fronzen tundra of St. Andrew's College in Aurora. The conditions would play a factor for both teams we efforts were made to clear the snow as best as we could to allow for a spirited and competitive affair between the two rivals. Both teams stuck to the ground game to assess the footing of their players and it paid off early for the Blues as Jack Edelist went for a 65 yard touchdown run to give the Blues an early lead. The Blues held that lead until the dying seconds of the first half where the Saints managed to punch the ball in taking a lead into halftime. Much of the second half continued on the same trend of a defensive battle. Despite a late charge the Blues unfortunately still fell short to the Saints with a final score of 12-6. The Blues will play a very pivotal match this Thursday against the Saints which will determine who will have the honor of facing St. Michael's in the Championship game. The Bues must win the game by atleast a touchdown for that to happen. We are confident that the boys will be able to do so and will prepare according.
On a beautiful fall evening, the two rival schools met again for Part 2 in the Battle of the Blues series. St. Michael's our host was using the game as an opportunity to raise money for Breast Cancer, a cause we were very pleased to help support. The money raised for Breast Cancer was perhaps the only bright spot for the team from UCC. The game started off terribly for our boys as St. Michael's put their foot on the gas pedal and did not take it off until the final whistle blew. Before we knew it, St. Michael's had a 28-0 lead at the end of the First Quarter scoring touchdowns on a punt return and other big defensive plays. The Blues could never find their stride in this game where in the end they suffered a difficult 42-0 defeat to the hands of their arch rivals. Some positives from the game were that the defence did not surrender any points in the second half and that hopefully a good deal of money was raised for a great cause. Our next match will take place on Saturday October 27th at St. Andrew's College with a 10:00 a.m. kickoff. We will all get back to the drawing board and will surely bounce back from this tough game.
After a solid month of practice and preperation, the JV Football team was keen and eager to play their first regular season match of the year. The University of Toronto once again played host to the Blues as they faced their rivals from down the street, the St. Michael's College. It was a beautiful fall night for a football game with both teams eager to face each other after much anticipation.
The game started off slow with a plethora of penalties being called on both teams stalling a few offensive drives. This was a pattern that continued through much of the game as both defences dominated play making life somewhat difficult for those with the intention of scoring points. In the end, the St. Michael's Kerry Blues emerged with a 17-0 defeat. A lot of lessons were learned from this match which will hopefully be put to good use in our rematch scheduled for Friday October 19th.
We are very proud of the boys and the effort with which they played last Friday and we know that they will be ready to do their best to take part 2 in this exciting and perenial series.
On a glorious fall day, the Junior Varsity Blues Football team began their 2018 campaign with an exhibition game versus the Huron Heights Warriors from NewMarket. Being our Association Day, the Blues had no shortage of supporters in the stands doing their best to cheer their Blues on. Despite being a very young and inexperienced group, the Blues got off to a great start with a few impressive drives on both Offence and Defence. There were no signs of nerves or inexperience. Overall, the Blues managed to control the ball in all three phases of the game. Coming up with long and impressive offensive drives. Coming up with huge returns on Special Teams or causing numerous turnovers on the defensive side of the ball. This truly was a complete team effort on the part of our boys resulting in a 25-14 victory for the Blues. This was a great start for our boys and one that will surely fuel them as they prepare for their next match versus the St. Michael's Kerry Blues in the annual Battle of the Blues on Friday October 12th.
Now that we have roughly 50 boys geared up and ready to go, we are going to begin practicing tonight (Tuesday September 11) at 3:45 on New Field. Here are a few things that you need to be aware of if you are going to commit to the JV team.
1) We will practice every night except for Thursdays- 3:45-5:15 p.m. on New Field (The only Thursdays we will practice will be in the case when we have a Friday night game)
2) Once the team is finalized, the entire team will have to complete a Concussion Baseline test prior to our first game, without it you will not be able to play.
3) A number of boys have asked me about proper footwear, you must all have a pair of cleats, soccer cleats are fine but you cannot play with running shoes
While our schedule is on Bluenet it is most likely going to change so please make sure to check that schedule with any other activities that you may have so that you do not have any conflicts and if you do please let me know ASAP.
